Why matches ÷ courts gives you the wrong finish time

The instinctive way to size a day is to divide the matches by the courts. It is always optimistic, sometimes badly, and it is optimistic for a structural reason: rounds are sequential. A knockout round cannot start before the round feeding it has finished, and a round robin round cannot overlap itself, because a team would have to be on two courts at once.

So the honest number sums each round separately and rounds each one up. A 10-team round robin is 45 matches; divided across 2 courts that looks like 23 slots, but the real figure is 27 — each of the 9 rounds runs 5 matches, which is 3 slots on 2 courts rather than 2.5, and that half-slot of rounding recurs nine times. At 30 minutes a slot that is a two-hour error on a day you have already told people finishes at five.

The gap widens as the courts outnumber the matches in a round. A 32-team knockout on 4 courts is 31 matches — flat division says 8 slots, the real answer is 9, because the final has one match on it and still costs a whole slot. The calculator above does the per-round sum for every format, which is the entire reason it exists rather than a formula card.

Byes, and why the match count never changes

A knockout bracket has to be a power of two to fill exactly, so any field that is not one gets byes: enough to reach the next power of two, seated on the top seeds so the strongest entrants come in at round two. Twelve teams take 4 byes into a 16-slot bracket, 20 teams take 12 into a 32-slot bracket, and 24 teams take 8. A field of 8, 16, 32 or 64 needs none.

The number that surprises people is that byes do not change the match count. A knockout eliminates exactly one team per match, so a field of n always plays n − 1 matches whether or not the bracket is full — 12 teams is 11 matches with or without those 4 byes. What byes change is the *shape*: the first round is smaller, so the day starts narrower and the court schedule is less even at the top than at the bottom.

Where byes land matters more than how many there are. Put them on the top seeds and the draw stays fair; scatter them and a mid-table team gets a free run at the semi-final. What the calculator assumes, and where it stops

Every figure above rests on stated assumptions, and they are worth knowing before you plan a venue booking around them. Courts run continuously with no lunch break and no overrun. A slot is one match plus its turnaround, so a 30-minute slot is a 25-minute match and five minutes to clear the court. Group stages are costed as groups of four with the top two advancing, and where the field does not divide by four the groups differ in size by at most one.

It also does not know your constraints. It has no rest-gap logic, so it will happily tell you a schedule fits that would put one team on court three times in a row, and it has no awareness of players entered in more than one category. Those are scheduling problems rather than sizing problems, and they are what Tournamyx Scores lays out a round at a time across your real courts.

When the number comes back too big — and for a round robin past about 12 teams it usually does — the fix is a format change, not more courts. Sixteen teams as a round robin is 120 matches and 30 hours on 2 courts. The same 16 as four groups of four into quarter-finals is 31 matches and 8 hours, and still guarantees every team three games. That trade is the whole reason to compare formats before drawing one, and the group stage + knockout generator builds the version that fits.

How many matches does a tournament have?

It depends entirely on the format. A single elimination bracket is n − 1 matches, a round robin is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2, a Swiss event is ⌈log₂ n⌉ × ⌊n ÷ 2⌋, and four-team groups feeding a knockout is roughly 1.5n plus the bracket. Sixteen teams is 15 matches, 120 matches, 32 matches and 31 matches respectively.

How long will my tournament take?

Sum the matches in each round, divide each round by your court count, round up, and multiply by the slot length. Sixteen teams as a single elimination bracket on 2 courts at 30-minute slots is 8 slots and about 4 hours; the same 16 teams as a full round robin is 60 slots and about 30 hours, which is a season rather than a day.

Why is matches divided by courts not the right answer?

Because rounds run one after another, not all at once. A round that does not fill every court still costs a whole slot, and that rounding recurs every round. A 10-team round robin on 2 courts is 27 slots, not the 23 a flat division gives — an error of two hours at 30-minute slots.

How many courts do I need for my tournament?

Enough that the per-round sum fits your day. One court at 30-minute slots fits 16 matches in eight hours, but the format decides the answer more than the field size does: 16 teams finish inside a single eight-hour day on 1 court as a single elimination bracket, on 2 courts as four groups of four into quarter-finals, on 2 courts as a Swiss event, and only on 8 courts as a full round robin.

How many byes does my bracket need?

Enough to reach the next power of two above your field size, seated on the top seeds. Twelve teams take 4 byes, 20 teams take 12, and 24 teams take 8. Fields of 8, 16, 32 and 64 need none, and byes never change the match count — a knockout is always n − 1.
