Round robin generator with standings that update themselves
Writing round robin fixtures by hand falls apart the moment a team is added or a court frees up. Tournamyx generates every pairing, balances them across your courts, and keeps a live table so nobody has to ask who’s top of the group.

In brief
What is a round robin generator?
A round robin generator produces the fixture list for a group in which every team plays every other team once, along with the table that ranks them. The Tournamyx round robin generator builds both in the browser for up to 24 teams, and the standings recalculate as each score is entered.
Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

Field guide
The round robin formula: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2
Every team plays every other team exactly once, so the match count is pure maths: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2. It grows fast — doubling the field roughly quadruples the matches — which is why the first question for any round robin schedule is whether your courts and hours can actually absorb it.
Rounds are just as predictable: an even field needs n − 1 rounds, an odd field needs n rounds because one team sits out each round with a bye. Paste your real team list into the generator above and both numbers appear instantly.
Matches and rounds by field size
| Teams | Matches | Rounds | Byes per round |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 | 0 |
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 1 |
| 6 | 15 | 5 | 0 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 | 0 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 | 0 |
| 12 | 66 | 11 | 0 |
How the circle method builds fair fixtures
The classic way to generate round robin fixtures is the circle method: fix one team in place, arrange the rest in a circle, pair them across it, then rotate the circle one position per round. Every pairing occurs exactly once, no team plays twice in a round, and byes rotate fairly through an odd field.
That’s the algorithm running in the generator above — and the same fixture engine on Tournamyx Scores additionally spreads each round across your real courts, so no court sits idle while another has a queue. It’s the engine that scheduled 755 matches across a 406-team event.
When round robin is the right call — and when it isn’t
Round robin is the fairest format there is: the standings reflect everyone playing everyone, an off day doesn’t end your tournament, and 3-1-0 points with score difference settles the table objectively. For leagues, training blocks, and fields of up to about eight teams, it’s usually the best choice — here’s a full guide to running one.
Past that size the quadratic match count catches up with you. Twelve teams means 66 matches — a full weekend. The standard fix is to split the field into round robin groups and send the top finishers into a bracket: try the group stage + knockout generator, or go straight to a knockout bracket if time is the only thing that matters. If what you actually wanted was everyone playing all day, a Swiss tournament gets a big field ranked in ⌈log₂ n⌉ rounds instead of n − 1.

How many matches does a round robin need?
Every team plays every other team once: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches. 6 teams means 15 matches over 5 rounds; 8 teams means 28 matches over 7 rounds. The generator does this maths — and the court assignments — for you.
What happens with an odd number of teams?
One team sits out each round with a bye, rotated fairly so every team rests once per cycle. Standings only count matches actually played.
How do standings and tiebreakers work?
Standings recalculate live as results are entered — played, won, and points at a glance, on the same public link everyone already has. No spreadsheet formulas to babysit.
Can fixtures be balanced across multiple courts?
Yes. Each round is spread across your actual court or field count, so the matches in a round run in parallel instead of queueing on one court — the same engine that scheduled 755 matches at a 406-team event.
Can a round robin feed into a knockout bracket?
Yes. Stages can be chained, so a round robin group stage flows straight into a knockout bracket — qualifiers are placed automatically when group play ends.
Is the round robin generator free?
Yes — events with up to 8 teams are free forever, and you can run as many as you like. Larger events upgrade or unlock a single event for a one-off fee.
