In brief

What does the 8 team round robin generator do?

The Tournamyx 8 team round robin generator produces the complete fixture list for eight teams — 28 matches in which every team plays every other team once — together with the standings table that ranks them. Both are built in the browser and the table recalculates as each score is entered.

An 8-team round robin runs 28 matches across 7 rounds, with 4 matches running in parallel each round and nobody sitting out. Every team plays 7 games.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

How it works

Build an 8 team round robin in three steps.

  1. 01~1 min

    Enter your eight teams

Paste the list or use the auto-fill. Order does not matter in a round robin — everyone meets everyone regardless, so there is no seeding decision to get wrong here.

  2. 02~5 sec

    All 28 fixtures appear

The circle method pairs the field into 7 rounds of 4 matches, with every team playing in every round.

  3. 03done

Score it and the table sorts itself

Type any result and the standings recalculate on 3-1-0 points, sorted by points then score difference. Run it on Tournamyx Scores to keep the table live on a link everyone can open.

Field guide

How many matches is a 8 team round robin?

Eight teams play 28 matches. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 — each of the 8 teams meets the other 7, and dividing by two removes the double-count, because A versus B and B versus A are the same fixture. Every team plays 7 games, which is the guarantee that makes the format worth its length.

Because 8 is even, every team is on court in every round — 4 matches run in parallel and nobody sits out. That is what keeps the round count at 7 rather than 8.

On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot, that is 14 slots — about 7 hours, or a full day. Rounds run sequentially and a round cannot overlap itself, because a team would be on two courts at once, so the honest figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts and not 28 ÷ 2. Adding courts past 4 saves nothing at all: a round is only 4 matches wide.

Fitting 28 matches into your booking

28 matches over 7 rounds comes to about 7 hours on 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot — a full day. That is a realistic single-session format for eight teams, and the reason round robin is the default choice at this size.

The lever that actually shortens the day is courts, up to a point. A round is 4 matches wide, so 4 courts runs one full round per slot and the whole event takes 7 slots. Past 4 courts you are paying for space that stands empty, because round 2 cannot start until round 1 has finished.

If 7 hours is more than your booking, the shorter honest options are Swiss at 12 matches and 3 h, or a group stage into a knockout at 15 matches and 4 h. Both still guarantee more than one game.

Ties, points and who finishes top

The generator ranks on 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, then splits level teams on score difference. That is the convention most one-day events use, and it is worth writing on the entry form before anyone plays, because a tie-break invented after the fact is the argument nobody wins.

Head-to-head is the other common first tie-break, and it behaves differently: it rewards the team that beat the other, which feels fairer in a small field and breaks down in a three-way tie. With eight teams every side plays the same 7 opponents, so the table is directly comparable and score difference is a fair separator.

Round robin tournaments explained covers the tie-break options in full, and how to run a round robin has the circle method written out if you want to check the draw by hand.

How many games in a 8 team round robin?

28. Every one of the 8 teams plays the other 7, and n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 removes the double-count — so 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28 matches. Each team plays 7 games.

How many rounds does a 8 team round robin take?

7. An even field pairs off completely, so all 8 teams play in each of the 7 rounds, 4 matches at a time.

How long does a 8 team round robin take?

About 7 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots — 14 slots in total. Rounds are sequential, so the figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts, not the 28 matches divided by the courts.

Does anyone sit out in a 8 team round robin?

No. Eight is even, so the field pairs off completely and all 8 teams play in every one of the 7 rounds — 4 matches running in parallel.

Is a round robin the right format for 8 teams?

Usually yes at this size. It guarantees every team 7 games, needs no seeding, and produces a table nobody can argue with — for about 7 hours on 2 courts.

Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?

The generator on this page is free and unlimited — it just does not save anything. The free tier of Tournamyx Scores covers events up to 8 players, so an 8-team event needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock to run live.
