In brief

What does the 48 team bracket generator do?

The Tournamyx 48 team bracket generator draws a single elimination knockout for forty-eight teams, placing the sixteen byes a 64-slot draw needs onto the top seeds. It produces all 47 matches across 6 rounds in the browser, with no account.

A 48-team single-elimination bracket runs 47 matches across 6 rounds, with 16 byes, which reduces the field to 32 in round two.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

How it works

Build a 48 team bracket in three steps.

  1. 01~1 min

    Enter your forty-eight teams

Paste the list in seed order. With sixteen byes to hand out, the order you type changes who plays once and who plays 6 times.

  2. 02~5 sec

    Sixteen byes place themselves

Forty-eight teams sit in a 64-slot bracket, leaving sixteen empty lines. They go to seeds 1 through 16, who enter in round two while the other 32 play round one.

  3. 03done

    Score it live

Sixteen matches in round one, then 5 more rounds to the final — 47 matches in total. Enter scores and the draw resolves, or run it live on Tournamyx Scores.

Field guide

How many byes does a 48 team bracket need?

Sixteen. A knockout draw has to be a power of two, so forty-eight teams sit in the next frame up — 64 slots — and the 16 unfilled lines become byes.

Forty-eight teams sits inside a 64-slot draw, so sixteen byes go to seeds 1 through 16. Sixteen matches run in round one and the bye teams enter in round two.

The match count does not change with the byes: a 48-team knockout is always **47 matches**, because every match eliminates exactly one team and 47 teams have to be eliminated. What the byes change is *who plays when*, which is why placing them correctly matters more than counting them.

Byes belong on the top seeds, in order. Scattering them for fairness is the common mistake — it rewards whoever drew the empty line rather than whoever earned it. Tournament brackets with byes covers the rule across all four formats.

How long does a 48 team knockout take?

On 2 courts with 30-minute slots, 24 slots — 12 hours, or more than one day.

That figure is not 47 matches divided by 2 courts. Rounds run in sequence, because a round cannot start before the round feeding it has finished, so the honest number sums each round's requirement separately and rounds each one up.

The later rounds are where extra courts stop paying. A final is one match and cannot use two courts, so beyond your largest round every additional court sits idle. The tournament schedule formula works through why flat division understates a day.

Every knockout has the same cost: half the field is out after one match. If that is not acceptable, a group stage or a round robin is the format to compare against — not a differently drawn bracket.

Should forty-eight teams play a knockout at all?

Usually yes, if you need a winner and the court time is fixed. Forty-eight teams in six rounds is an efficient way to produce one.

The trade is always the same. Forty-seven matches is the cheapest way to find a champion, and it is also the format where half your entrants play once and go home. For a free local event that is usually fine; for a paid-entry weekend it usually is not.

If more games matter more than a fast winner, compare the round robin generator, where every team plays every other, or the group stage and knockout generator, which guarantees two or three games before a bracket decides it. How tournament brackets work sets the five formats side by side with their match counts.

If you want the knockout but not the single-loss exit, double elimination gives every team a second life at roughly double the matches.

How many matches is a 48 team bracket?

Forty-seven matches over six rounds. Every match eliminates one team and forty-seven teams must be eliminated to leave a champion, so the count is always one fewer than the field — byes do not change it.

How many byes in a 48 team bracket?

Sixteen. Forty-eight teams sit in a 64-slot draw, and 64 minus 48 is 16. They go to seeds 1 through 16, who enter in round two while the remaining 32 teams play round one.

Who should get the byes in a 48 team draw?

The top sixteen seeds, in seed order. A bye is an advantage, so it should follow ranking rather than a random draw — otherwise you reward whoever happened to land on the empty line.

How many rounds does a 48 team tournament have?

Six. Rounds are the ceiling of log base 2 of the field, so anything from 33 to 64 teams runs six rounds. Doubling the field only ever adds one more round.

Is a 48 team bracket generator free?

Yes. The generator on this page runs entirely in the browser with no account and no signup. Running the event live on Tournamyx Scores — shared results, scoring from a phone — is free for up to 8 participants.
