Volleyball timings swing more than almost any other sport, because the format decides the clock. A single set to 25 runs about 25 minutes with changeover. A best-of-three runs about 55. Choose the wrong one for pool play and you double the length of your day without adding a single match.

The usual shape for a one-day event is single-set pool play into best-of-three playoffs: quick games while the field is large, proper matches once it matters. Twelve teams in three pools of four is 18 pool matches; on two courts at 25 minutes that is nine slots, about three hours and forty-five minutes. The playoffs that follow, quarter-finals through to the final, are seven matches, but they run sequentially, so at best-of-three length they add roughly three and a half hours.

That totals a long day, which is why many organizers cut the playoff to semi-finals only, or keep single sets throughout. Volleyball pools finish level constantly, far more often than football or basketball, because there are fewer matches and no draws. Three teams on two wins each in a pool of four is a normal Saturday, not an edge case, and the order you separate them in decides who plays in the quarter-final.

The standard hierarchy is match points first, then sets ratio, then points ratio, then head-to-head. What matters is less which one you pick and more that it was published before play started. A tiebreak announced after the results are in looks chosen to produce an outcome, even when it was not, and that is the version of the story that reaches the team that missed out.
