In brief
How do you make a Smash bracket?
The Tournamyx Smash bracket generator draws a double elimination bracket for Smash players: an upper bracket, a lower bracket and a grand final. A 16-player bracket runs 30 matches in 11 rounds, about 2.8 hours when every set is a best-of-three.
Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live, with scores, standings and a public link, happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

Field guide
How long a Smash double elimination bracket takes
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate rulesets commonly use three stocks, a seven-minute timer and best-of-three sets, with best-of-five later in the bracket. A best-of-three set takes about 15 minutes with character and stage picks and a best-of-five about 25, and this page budgets those. Online, every set in a round can start together; at a venue the 8 setups on this page decide how many run at once.
A 16-player bracket is 4 upper bracket rounds, 6 lower bracket rounds and the grand final, 11 rounds and 30 matches. On 8 setups that is 2.8 hours at best-of-three and 4.6 hours at best-of-five. Few events run best-of-five in every round: the usual plan is best-of-three early and best-of-five late, which lands between the two columns.
Smash double elimination, 8 setups
| Players | Matches | Rounds | Best-of-three (15 min) | Best-of-five (25 min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 14 | 8 | 2 h | 3.3 h |
| 16 | 30 | 11 | 2.8 h | 4.6 h |
| 32 | 62 | 14 | 3.8 h | 6.3 h |
How many setups a Smash bracket needs
Smash is run on setups, meaning one console, one screen and two controllers, so at a venue the number of setups caps how many sets run at once. Rulesets vary by event, so publish the stage list, the stock count and the timer before registration closes. The table shows 16 players on 2, 4 and 8 setups. Going from 2 setups to 4 saves 5 slots; going from 4 to 8 saves only 1 slot, because the later rounds are narrower than the setups you add.
16 players, best-of-three sets of 15 minutes, by number of setups
| Setups | Slots | Run time |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 17 | 4.3 h |
| 4 | 12 | 3 h |
| 8 | 11 | 2.8 h |
Upper bracket, lower bracket and the grand final
The upper bracket is an ordinary knockout. A player that loses there drops into the lower bracket instead of going home, and a player that loses in the lower bracket is out, so nobody is eliminated before their second defeat. The grand final is the upper bracket winner against the lower bracket winner. In Tournamyx Scores you choose at generation time whether it is one match or a bracket reset, and it is worth publishing that choice before registration closes. The format explainer is double elimination, and the double elimination bracket generator draws any field size, not just Smash.
More than 32 players
This generator draws up to 32 players. For a bigger open qualifier, Swiss is a better first stage, with the top eight or sixteen going into a double elimination playoff. Tournamyx Scores runs double elimination for 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 players. For the whole event, see esports tournament software and how to run an esports tournament.

How many matches are in a 16-player Smash double elimination bracket?
30 matches over 11 rounds. Every player but the champion goes out after two defeats, and each match produces one defeat, so the bracket needs 2 times the number of players minus 2 matches.
How long does a Smash double elimination bracket take at best-of-five?
A 16-player bracket takes 4.6 hours at best-of-five, using about 25 minutes a round on 8 setups. At best-of-three it takes 2.8 hours.
Can I run a Smash bracket live with results?
Yes. Tournamyx Scores runs double elimination live for 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 players with one public link. The free plan covers 8 participants, so a larger field needs Plus (64 participants) or a one-off event unlock.
