Group stage and knockout generator — the World Cup format, automated
The best tournament format is also the worst one to run by hand: group tables, qualification scenarios, and a bracket that depends on all of them. Tournamyx chains both stages so qualifiers flow into the knockout on their own.

Field guide
Why groups + knockout is the World Cup format
Pure knockout is brutal — half your field travels home after one game. Pure round robin is fair but slow. The group stage + knockout format takes the best of both: round robin groups guarantee every team a real run of matches, then the top finishers cross into a single elimination bracket for a finish people actually gather to watch.
It’s the format of the World Cup, the Champions League, and most well-run local events for the same reason: guaranteed games for the people who paid to enter, a climax for everyone else.
How many groups should your tournament have?
Groups of four are the gold standard: three guaranteed matches per team and a clean top-two qualification with a built-in tension game in round three. From there the group count follows your field size — and the knockout size follows the qualifier count.
The generator above applies this shape automatically as you paste teams, and always uses an even group count so that the 1st-vs-2nd cross-pairing (winner of Group A meets runner-up of Group B) never produces a round-one rematch of group rivals.
Standard shapes, top 2 qualify per group
| Teams | Groups | Group matches | Knockout | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 2 × 4 | 12 | Semi-finals (3) | 15 |
| 12 | 4 × 3 | 12 | Quarter-finals (7) | 19 |
| 16 | 4 × 4 | 24 | Quarter-finals (7) | 31 |
| 24 | 6 × 4 | 36 | Round of 16 + byes (11) | 47 |
The handover is where events fall apart
The dangerous moment in this format isn’t the group stage — it’s 5 pm, when three group tables need reading, tiebreakers need applying, and eight names need copying into a bracket while teams stand around waiting. That handover is exactly what should be automated: on Tournamyx Scores the stages are chained, so the moment the last group match is saved, qualifiers are seeded into the single elimination bracket and the public link flips to knockout mode.
You can rehearse the whole flow in the widget above: score a group fully and watch its qualifiers drop into the bracket. For scheduling both stages across real courts and hours, see the tournament schedule maker.

How do teams qualify from the group stage?
You choose how many teams advance from each group. When the group stage ends, qualifiers are placed into the knockout bracket automatically — the stages are chained, not two separate tournaments.
What group sizes work best?
Groups of 4 are the sweet spot: three guaranteed matches per team and a clean top-two qualification. 8 teams make 2 groups feeding semifinals; 16 teams make 4 groups feeding quarterfinals — exactly the World Cup shape.
Can I adjust the knockout bracket after the groups finish?
Yes. Preview the bracket once qualifiers are known and reorder any matchup with drag-and-drop before the knockout round starts.
Can I preview the whole tournament before publishing?
Yes. Walk through every group fixture, court assignment, and the bracket progression before participants see anything — catch an imbalance before it becomes an argument.
What if a team drops out mid-event?
Drag them out, drop a replacement in. Group tables, the bracket, and the public link everyone is checking all update together.
Is the group stage and knockout generator free?
Yes for events with up to 8 teams — enough for a 2-groups-into-semis format — with unlimited events. Bigger fields upgrade or unlock a single event for a one-off fee.
