8 team double elimination bracket with the losers bracket drawn for you

An eight-team double elimination draw is two brackets, not one, and the losers side is the half that gets drawn wrong. This generator builds both — 14 matches across 8 rounds, grand final included.

In brief

What does the 8 team double elimination generator do?

The Tournamyx 8 team double elimination bracket generator draws both halves of a two-life tournament for eight teams: the winners bracket, and the losers bracket a team drops into after a first defeat. It runs 14 matches and needs no byes, because 8 is a power of two.

An 8-team double elimination event runs 14 matches across 8 rounds — 3 in the winners bracket, 4 in the losers bracket and the grand final. Every team is guaranteed at least two games, because it takes two defeats to go out.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

8 team double elimination at a glance

Makes
A full winners and losers bracket for eight teams — 14 matches, grand final drawn in
Best for
An eight-team event where one bad match should not end a team's day, and there is court time for roughly twice as many games

Free, with no usage limit — the generator on this page is not metered
Account needed
None — nothing to sign up for and nothing to install
Data stored
Nothing. The generator runs in your browser, and closing the tab discards the draw
Largest field
8 teams as this page is set up, and up to 32 if you paste a longer list
Where it stops
Double elimination costs 14 matches against 7 for a straight knockout of the same field. Where the booking will not take that, a group stage gives a similar guarantee for fewer matches

How it works

Build an 8 team double elimination bracket in three steps.

  1. 01~1 min

    Enter your eight teams

Paste the list in seed order, or shuffle for an open draw. Eight is a power of two, so the draw fills exactly and no byes are needed.

  2. 02~5 sec

    Both brackets appear

The winners bracket runs 3 rounds as an ordinary knockout. Below it the losers bracket is drawn in full — 4 rounds — with incoming losers routed to the far side of the draw so nobody meets the same opponent twice in a row.

  3. 03done

Score it and both sides resolve

Enter a result and the winner advances while the loser drops into the losers bracket automatically. Run it on Tournamyx Scores to keep both brackets live on one public link.

Field guide

How many matches is a 8 team double elimination?

14. The arithmetic is 2n − 2, and it is exact rather than approximate: every match produces exactly one defeat, and every team except the champion leaves with two defeats. 7 eliminated teams at two defeats each is 14 defeats, so 14 matches. If the losers-bracket winner takes the first grand final, a reset decider adds one more — 15 in total.

Those 14 matches sit across 8 rounds: 3 in the winners bracket, 4 in the losers bracket, and the grand final. The losers bracket needs roughly twice as many rounds as the winners side because it alternates — a round absorbing the teams that have just dropped from the winners bracket, then a round pairing the survivors against each other.

On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot the event runs about 4.5 hours — most of a day. Compare that with 2 h for a straight single elimination draw of the same eight teams. You are buying the second life with roughly double the court time.

Why the losers bracket is the half that goes wrong

The winners bracket is an ordinary eight-team knockout and nobody draws it wrong. The losers bracket is where hand-drawn 8-team double elimination falls apart, because it has to answer a question a single knockout never asks: when a team drops out of the winners bracket, where in the losers bracket does it land?

Drop them into the nearest slot and you get an immediate rematch — the same two teams meeting twice in a row, which feels arbitrary to everyone watching. The convention is to route incoming losers to the opposite side of the losers draw from where they fell, so a rematch can only happen after both teams have played someone else. The generator above does this routing for you.

The other decision is the grand final. The winners-bracket champion arrives undefeated; the losers-bracket champion arrives with one defeat. A single grand final means the undefeated team can be knocked out by a team that has already lost — which is why many events play a reset: if the losers-bracket team wins, a second decider is played and both teams are then on one defeat. Single elimination versus double elimination walks through both conventions.

Is double elimination worth it for 8 teams?

The case for it is the guarantee. In a straight knockout, 4 of your eight teams play once and go home — half the field, after one match. Double elimination guarantees everyone at least two, and the teams that go deep on the losers side play considerably more. For an event people have travelled to, that is the difference between a good day and a wasted one.

The case against it is the 7 extra matches and roughly 2.5 extra hours on 2 courts. If that does not fit the booking, a group stage into a knockout is the honest alternative: 15 matches, 4 h, and 3 guaranteed games each — a similar promise for less court time, at the cost of a less dramatic finish.

The scheduling wrinkle worth knowing before you commit: the losers bracket runs almost twice as many rounds as the winners bracket, so the two sides do not finish together. Towards the end you have a winners-bracket finalist waiting while the losers side plays several more rounds. On 2 courts that idle time is real, and it is the reason double elimination feels longer than the match count alone suggests.

How many matches in a 8 team double elimination bracket?

14. The formula is 2n − 2: every team but the champion leaves with two defeats, and each match produces one defeat. A grand final reset, if the losers-bracket winner takes the first one, makes it 15.

How many rounds is a 8 team double elimination?

8 — 3 in the winners bracket, 4 in the losers bracket, and the grand final. The losers bracket needs more rounds because it alternates between absorbing teams dropping from the winners side and pairing its own survivors.

Does a 8 team double elimination bracket need byes?

No. Eight is a power of two, so the winners bracket fills exactly and every team plays in round one. Byes are only needed when the field does not reach the next power of two.

How long does a 8 team double elimination take?

About 4.5 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots, against 2 h for a single elimination draw of the same field. Rounds are sequential, so the figure sums the per-round slot counts rather than dividing 14 by 2.

What happens in the grand final?

The winners-bracket champion meets the losers-bracket champion. The winners-bracket team arrives undefeated, so many events play a reset — if the losers-bracket team wins the first grand final, both are on one defeat and a decider settles it. The generator draws the grand final and supports the reset.

Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?

The generator on this page is free and unlimited, and saves nothing. Tournamyx Scores runs double elimination live for fields from 4 to 64 teams; its free tier covers events up to 8 players, so an 8-team event needs a paid plan or a single-event unlock.
