In brief
What does the 4 team round robin generator do?
The Tournamyx 4 team round robin generator produces the complete fixture list for four teams — 6 matches in which every team plays every other team once — together with the standings table that ranks them. Both are built in the browser and the table recalculates as each score is entered.
A 4-team round robin runs 6 matches across 3 rounds, with 2 matches running in parallel each round and nobody sitting out. Every team plays 3 games.
Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

The circle method pairs the field into 3 rounds of 2 matches, with every team playing in every round.
- 03done
Score it and the table sorts itself
Type any result and the standings recalculate on 3-1-0 points, sorted by points then score difference. Run it on Tournamyx Scores to keep the table live on a link everyone can open.
Field guide
How many matches is a 4 team round robin?
Four teams play 6 matches. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 — each of the 4 teams meets the other 3, and dividing by two removes the double-count, because A versus B and B versus A are the same fixture. Every team plays 3 games, which is the guarantee that makes the format worth its length.
Because 4 is even, every team is on court in every round — 2 matches run in parallel and nobody sits out. That is what keeps the round count at 3 rather than 4.
On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot, that is 3 slots — about 1.5 hours, or a morning. Rounds run sequentially and a round cannot overlap itself, because a team would be on two courts at once, so the honest figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts and not 6 ÷ 2. Adding courts past 2 saves nothing at all: a round is only 2 matches wide.
4 teams, four formats compared — 2 courts, 30-minute slots
| Format | Matches | Rounds | Guaranteed games | Run time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round robin | 6 | 3 | 3 | 1.5 h |
| Swiss | 4 | 2 | 2 | 1 h |
| Groups + knockout | 7 | 4 | 3 | 2 h |
| Single elimination | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 h |
Fitting 6 matches into your booking
6 matches over 3 rounds comes to about 1.5 hours on 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot — a morning. That is a realistic single-session format for four teams, and the reason round robin is the default choice at this size.
The lever that actually shortens the day is courts, up to a point. A round is 2 matches wide, so 2 courts runs one full round per slot and the whole event takes 3 slots. Past 2 courts you are paying for space that stands empty, because round 2 cannot start until round 1 has finished.
If 1.5 hours is more than your booking, the shorter honest options are Swiss at 4 matches and 1 h, or a group stage into a knockout at 7 matches and 2 h. Both still guarantee more than one game.
Ties, points and who finishes top
The generator ranks on 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, then splits level teams on score difference. That is the convention most one-day events use, and it is worth writing on the entry form before anyone plays, because a tie-break invented after the fact is the argument nobody wins.
Head-to-head is the other common first tie-break, and it behaves differently: it rewards the team that beat the other, which feels fairer in a small field and breaks down in a three-way tie. With four teams every side plays the same 3 opponents, so the table is directly comparable and score difference is a fair separator.
Round robin tournaments explained covers the tie-break options in full, and how to run a round robin has the circle method written out if you want to check the draw by hand.

How many games in a 4 team round robin?
6. Every one of the 4 teams plays the other 3, and n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 removes the double-count — so 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 matches. Each team plays 3 games.
How many rounds does a 4 team round robin take?
3. An even field pairs off completely, so all 4 teams play in each of the 3 rounds, 2 matches at a time.
How long does a 4 team round robin take?
About 1.5 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots — 3 slots in total. Rounds are sequential, so the figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts, not the 6 matches divided by the courts.
Does anyone sit out in a 4 team round robin?
No. Four is even, so the field pairs off completely and all 4 teams play in every one of the 3 rounds — 2 matches running in parallel.
Is a round robin the right format for 4 teams?
Usually yes at this size. It guarantees every team 3 games, needs no seeding, and produces a table nobody can argue with — for about 1.5 hours on 2 courts.
Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?
The generator on this page is free and unlimited — it just does not save anything. The free tier of Tournamyx Scores covers events up to 8 players, so a 4-team event needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock to run live.
