In brief

What does the 7 team round robin generator do?

The Tournamyx 7 team round robin generator produces the complete fixture list for seven teams — 21 matches in which every team plays every other team once — together with the standings table that ranks them. Both are built in the browser and the table recalculates as each score is entered.

A 7-team round robin runs 21 matches across 7 rounds, with 3 matches each round and one team sitting out, which is why an odd field needs 7 rounds rather than 6. Every team plays 6 games.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

How it works

Build a 7 team round robin in three steps.

  1. 01~1 min

    Enter your seven teams

Paste the list or use the auto-fill. Order does not matter in a round robin — everyone meets everyone regardless, so there is no seeding decision to get wrong here.

  2. 02~5 sec

    All 21 fixtures appear

The circle method pairs the field and rotates the bye, so the 7 rounds come out balanced and no team sits out twice before the others have sat out once.

  3. 03done

Score it and the table sorts itself

Type any result and the standings recalculate on 3-1-0 points, sorted by points then score difference. Run it on Tournamyx Scores to keep the table live on a link everyone can open.

Field guide

How many matches is a 7 team round robin?

Seven teams play 21 matches. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 — each of the 7 teams meets the other 6, and dividing by two removes the double-count, because A versus B and B versus A are the same fixture. Every team plays 6 games, which is the guarantee that makes the format worth its length.

Because 7 is odd, the 7-team round robin cannot pair everyone off: exactly one team sits out each round, and the bye rotates so nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once. That is why an odd field needs 7 rounds rather than 6.

On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot, that is 14 slots — about 7 hours, or a full day. Rounds run sequentially and a round cannot overlap itself, because a team would be on two courts at once, so the honest figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts and not 21 ÷ 2. Adding courts past 3 saves nothing at all: a round is only 3 matches wide.

Fitting 21 matches into your booking

21 matches over 7 rounds comes to about 7 hours on 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot — a full day. That is a realistic single-session format for seven teams, and the reason round robin is the default choice at this size.

The lever that actually shortens the day is courts, up to a point. A round is 3 matches wide, so 3 courts runs one full round per slot and the whole event takes 7 slots. Past 3 courts you are paying for space that stands empty, because round 2 cannot start until round 1 has finished.

If 7 hours is more than your booking, the shorter honest options are Swiss at 9 matches and 3 h, or a group stage into a knockout at 12 matches and 4 h. Both still guarantee more than one game.

Ties, points and who finishes top

The generator ranks on 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, then splits level teams on score difference. That is the convention most one-day events use, and it is worth writing on the entry form before anyone plays, because a tie-break invented after the fact is the argument nobody wins.

Head-to-head is the other common first tie-break, and it behaves differently: it rewards the team that beat the other, which feels fairer in a small field and breaks down in a three-way tie. With an odd field there is a second wrinkle — a rotating bye means teams reach the final round having played the same number of games, but not necessarily against the same opposition strength.

Round robin tournaments explained covers the tie-break options in full, and how to run a round robin has the circle method written out if you want to check the draw by hand.

How many games in a 7 team round robin?

21. Every one of the 7 teams plays the other 6, and n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 removes the double-count — so 7 × 6 ÷ 2 = 21 matches. Each team plays 6 games.

How many rounds does a 7 team round robin take?

7. An odd field cannot pair off completely, so one team sits out each round and the bye rotates through all 7 teams — which takes 7 rounds rather than 6.

How long does a 7 team round robin take?

About 7 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots — 14 slots in total. Rounds are sequential, so the figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts, not the 21 matches divided by the courts.

Who sits out in a 7 team round robin?

One team each round, rotating. With 7 teams the circle method holds one position fixed and rotates the rest, so the bye passes through every team exactly once across the 7 rounds. No team sits out twice before all the others have sat out once.

Is a round robin the right format for 7 teams?

Usually yes at this size. It guarantees every team 6 games, needs no seeding, and produces a table nobody can argue with — for about 7 hours on 2 courts.

Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?

The generator on this page is free and unlimited — it just does not save anything. The free tier of Tournamyx Scores covers events up to 8 players, so a 7-team event needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock to run live.
