Random team generator that splits a list into fair teams

Twenty names in a group chat and four teams to make. Paste the list, pick a number, and it deals them out — snake-draft balanced if your list is roughly in strength order, or genuinely random if it is not.

Balanced deals the list snake-style (1-2-3-3-2-1), so a roster typed strongest-first splits evenly. Hit Randomise first if the order means nothing. Nothing is saved here.

How it works

Split a list into teams in three steps.

  1. 01~1 min

    Paste your list of names

One name per line — straight out of a group chat, a sign-up sheet or a spreadsheet column. Up to 64 people.

  2. 02~2 sec

    Pick how many teams

Two to eight. The generator tells you which team counts divide your list evenly, and spreads any remainder rather than dumping it on one team.

  3. 03done

    Randomise, or keep it balanced

Balanced deals snake-style down and back up the list, so a roster typed strongest-first splits evenly. Hit Randomise first if the order means nothing.

Field guide

Random and fair are not the same thing

A pure shuffle is random, and it will regularly hand one team the four best players. That is not a bug in the shuffle — it is what randomness does — but it is why a coin-toss split so often produces a first game that is over in ten minutes and an afternoon nobody enjoys.

The fix is the snake draft, and it is the same method every playground captain and every fantasy league converges on. Deal the list across the teams — 1, 2, 3, 4 — then deal the next pass back the other way — 4, 3, 2, 1 — and repeat. Team one gets the first pick and the eighth; team four gets the fourth and the fifth. Over a full list the picks even out almost exactly.

The snake only helps if the order carries information. If your list arrived in strength order, or you typed the good players first without really thinking about it, the Balanced setting above will split them evenly. If the order is alphabetical or arbitrary, hit Randomise first and then deal — that gives you a fair random split rather than a fair split of a meaningless sequence.

Splitting evenly, and what to do with the remainder

Seventeen people do not divide into four teams. The generator handles it by spreading the remainder — one extra player on the first teams rather than a fifth team of one — and tells you which team counts would have divided cleanly, so you can change the number instead of living with lopsided sides.

For most sports the answer is to change the team count rather than accept uneven teams, because an extra player is a real advantage in a small-sided game. Seventeen people are much better as a five-a-side rotation with substitutes than as four teams of four and a spare. Where uneven teams are unavoidable, rotate the extra player through the sides between games.

If you are drawing groups rather than teams — splitting entrants into pools for a group stage — the same deal works, but you probably want the group stage + knockout generator instead, which builds the groups and the fixtures that follow from them in one step.

From a team list to an actual tournament

Splitting the names is the first two minutes. The next question is what the teams play, and the answer is almost always driven by how long you have: four teams is six matches as a round robin and three as a knockout bracket, which is the difference between everyone playing three games and half of them playing one.

Copy the teams out of this page with the copy button and paste them straight into any of the generators on this site — they all take a plain list, one per line. Nothing on this page is saved anywhere, so the clipboard is the handover.

When you want the teams, the fixtures and the live scores to be one system rather than three tabs, that is what Tournamyx Scores is for: events up to 8 players are free, and every event publishes a public link that needs no login.

How does the random team generator split the list?

Balanced deals snake-style — 1, 2, 3, 4 then 4, 3, 2, 1 — so a list typed roughly in strength order splits evenly across the teams. Randomise shuffles the list first, which gives a genuinely random draw.

Why not just shuffle the names?

A pure shuffle regularly puts the strongest players on one team, because that is what randomness does. Snake-dealing a strength-ordered list balances the sides while still being unpredictable if you shuffle first.

What happens if the number of people does not divide evenly?

The remainder is spread across the first teams — one extra player each — rather than concentrated. The generator also tells you which team counts would divide your list exactly, so you can change the number instead.

How many people can I split at once?

Up to 64 names, into anything from two to eight teams. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

Can I use it to draw groups for a group stage?

You can, but the group stage and knockout generator is a better fit — it draws the groups and builds the fixtures and the knockout that follow from them, rather than just splitting the list.

Is the random team generator free?

Yes, completely, with no account and no email. Nothing is saved — close the tab and the draw is gone, which is deliberate.
