32 team bracket generator thirty-one matches, no byes
Thirty-two is a power of two, so the draw fills exactly and nobody gets a bye. What it does need is space: the first round is sixteen simultaneous matches, and your court count decides whether that is two hours or seven.

How it works
Build a 32 team bracket in three steps.
- 01~4 min
Enter your thirty-two teams
Paste the full list in seed order, or shuffle for an open draw. At thirty-two teams the seeding sets the shape of five rounds, so it is worth doing deliberately.
- 02~5 sec
Read the round of 32
Thirty-two fills the bracket exactly — no byes, every team plays round one. The top eight seeds land in separate eighths of the draw and cannot meet before the quarter-finals.

Five rounds resolve as you type. Run the same draw on Tournamyx Scores and thirty-two captains track their own next match without asking you.

Thirty-one matches, five rounds — and why courts decide the day
Thirty-two teams means thirty-one matches, because thirty-one teams must lose for one to win. They fall into five rounds: sixteen in the round of 32, eight in the round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final. No byes, no uneven paths, and every finalist has won exactly four matches.
What varies wildly is how long it takes, and the variable is not the match count — it is the width of round one. Sixteen matches cannot be compressed below sixteen matches, so on two courts that round alone is eight slots, three and a half hours before the field is even halved. On eight courts the same round is two slots.
The floor is five slots, a little over two hours, and you hit it at sixteen courts. Nobody has sixteen courts. The practical target is four to eight, where the whole event lands between two and a half and four hours — a real one-day tournament. Below four courts, a thirty-two team knockout stops fitting a day at all.
32 team knockout, run time by court count (25-minute slots)
| Courts | Slots needed | Total time | Round 1 alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 16 | 6h 40m | 8 slots |
| 4 | 9 | 3h 45m | 4 slots |
| 8 | 6 | 2h 30m | 2 slots |
| 16 | 5 | 2h 5m | 1 slot |
Seeding by eighths, not by pairs
At eight teams seeding is one decision. At thirty-two it is structural, and the rule scales the same way it always has: seed 1 at the top of the draw, seed 2 at the bottom, seeds 3 and 4 heading the two middle quarters, then seeds 5 to 8 heading the remaining eighths. Done properly the top eight seeds are spread one per eighth and cannot meet before the quarter-finals.
Get it wrong — by seeding only the first-round pairs and leaving the rest to fall where it falls — and you can end up with your two strongest teams in the same quarter. They meet in the quarter-final, your best match of the day happens at 11am, and the final is a formality. Everyone feels the anticlimax and almost nobody can name the cause.
The generator applies standard seeding from the order you paste. If you have no rankings, shuffle rather than guessing: a random draw is defensible and an invented seeding is not. How to seed a tournament bracket covers the edge cases.
One guaranteed game for thirty-two teams is a hard sell
A straight knockout eliminates sixteen teams in the first round. For an invitational or a final stage where everyone arrived knowing the terms, that is fine. For an open-entry event where teams paid to enter and travelled, half your field is finished within ninety minutes and you will hear about it when registration opens next year.
Eight groups of four feeding a round of 16 costs sixty-three matches against the knockout’s thirty-one, but guarantees every team three games. Thirty-two divides into eight fours with no remainder, so there is no awkward group to explain. It roughly doubles the day, which on eight courts is the difference between two and a half hours and about five — still one Saturday. Build it with the group stage + knockout generator.
If you want more games without doubling the schedule, a five-round Swiss is eighty matches, guarantees five games each, and eliminates nobody — the standard shape for chess and esports fields at this size. A full round robin is 496 matches and is not a tournament, it is a season.
32 teams under each format
| Format | Matches | Guaranteed games | Eliminated early |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | 31 | 1 | 16 after round one |
| Double elimination | 62 | 2 | Nobody after one loss |
| 8 groups of 4 + last 16 | 63 | 3 | 16 after the groups |
| Swiss (5 rounds) | 80 | 5 | Nobody |
| Round robin | 496 | 31 | Nobody |

How many matches are in a 32 team bracket?
Thirty-one, across five rounds: sixteen in the round of 32, eight in the round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and one final. Thirty-one teams must be eliminated and each match eliminates exactly one.
Does a 32 team bracket have byes?
No. Thirty-two is a power of two, so every slot is filled and every team plays in the first round. Byes appear only when the team count is not 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64.
How long does a 32 team tournament take?
On 25-minute slots: about six hours forty minutes on two courts, three hours forty-five on four, and two and a half hours on eight. The round of 32 is sixteen matches wide, which is where extra courts pay off.
How should I seed a 32 team draw?
By eighths. Seed 1 at the top, seed 2 at the bottom, seeds 3 and 4 heading the middle quarters, seeds 5 to 8 heading the remaining eighths. That keeps the top eight apart until the quarter-finals.
How many courts do I need for 32 teams?
Four is the practical minimum for a one-day event, giving about three hours forty-five minutes. Eight brings it to two and a half hours. Below four courts the first round alone takes more than three hours.
Can the free generator handle 32 teams?
Yes. The bracket generators accept up to 64 entrants and place byes automatically for any count in between. Running a 32-team event live on Tournamyx Scores needs a Plus plan, which covers up to 64 players.
