In brief
What does the 16 team round robin generator do?
The Tournamyx 16 team round robin generator produces the complete fixture list for sixteen teams — 120 matches in which every team plays every other team once — together with the standings table that ranks them. Both are built in the browser and the table recalculates as each score is entered.
A 16-team round robin runs 120 matches across 15 rounds, with 8 matches running in parallel each round and nobody sitting out. Every team plays 15 games.
Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

Field guide
How many matches is a 16 team round robin?
Sixteen teams play 120 matches. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 — each of the 16 teams meets the other 15, and dividing by two removes the double-count, because A versus B and B versus A are the same fixture. Every team plays 15 games, which is the guarantee that makes the format worth its length.
Because 16 is even, every team is on court in every round — 8 matches run in parallel and nobody sits out. That is what keeps the round count at 15 rather than 16.
On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot, that is 60 slots — about 30 hours, or more than one day. Rounds run sequentially and a round cannot overlap itself, because a team would be on two courts at once, so the honest figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts and not 120 ÷ 2. Adding courts past 8 saves nothing at all: a round is only 8 matches wide.
16 teams, four formats compared — 2 courts, 30-minute slots
| Format | Matches | Rounds | Guaranteed games | Run time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round robin | 120 | 15 | 15 | 30 h |
| Swiss | 32 | 4 | 4 | 8 h |
| Groups + knockout | 31 | 6 | 3 | 8 h |
| Single elimination | 15 | 4 | 1 | 4 h |
120 matches is a season, not a Sunday
At sixteen teams a full round robin is 120 matches over 15 rounds — about 30 hours on 2 courts. That is a league played over weeks, not an event that finishes on one afternoon, and treating it as a one-day format is the most common way a 16-team draw goes wrong.
If you have weeks, run it as a league and let the table build. If you have a day, the honest alternatives are a group stage feeding a knockout — 31 matches, 8 h, and still 3 guaranteed games each — or Swiss, which ranks the same sixteen teams in 4 rounds and 8 h without anyone being eliminated.
Swiss is the underrated answer at this field size. It gives everyone 4 games, produces a genuine ranking, and costs 88 fewer matches than the full round robin.
Ties, points and who finishes top
The generator ranks on 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, then splits level teams on score difference. That is the convention most one-day events use, and it is worth writing on the entry form before anyone plays, because a tie-break invented after the fact is the argument nobody wins.
Head-to-head is the other common first tie-break, and it behaves differently: it rewards the team that beat the other, which feels fairer in a small field and breaks down in a three-way tie. With sixteen teams every side plays the same 15 opponents, so the table is directly comparable and score difference is a fair separator.
Round robin tournaments explained covers the tie-break options in full, and how to run a round robin has the circle method written out if you want to check the draw by hand.

How many games in a 16 team round robin?
120. Every one of the 16 teams plays the other 15, and n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 removes the double-count — so 16 × 15 ÷ 2 = 120 matches. Each team plays 15 games.
How many rounds does a 16 team round robin take?
15. An even field pairs off completely, so all 16 teams play in each of the 15 rounds, 8 matches at a time.
How long does a 16 team round robin take?
About 30 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots — 60 slots in total. Rounds are sequential, so the figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts, not the 120 matches divided by the courts.
Does anyone sit out in a 16 team round robin?
No. Sixteen is even, so the field pairs off completely and all 16 teams play in every one of the 15 rounds — 8 matches running in parallel.
Is a round robin the right format for 16 teams?
Only if you have weeks. At 120 matches and roughly 30 hours it is a league season. For a single day with sixteen teams, a group stage into a knockout costs 31 matches and still guarantees 3 games each.
Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?
The generator on this page is free and unlimited — it just does not save anything. The free tier of Tournamyx Scores covers events up to 8 players, so a 16-team event needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock to run live.
