A 9-team knockout does not fill a bracket, which is the whole difficulty: 16 slots, 9 teams, seven empty lines to place. The generator puts them on the right seeds and draws the ladder through to the final.

In brief
What does the 9 team bracket generator do?
The Tournamyx 9 team bracket generator draws a single elimination knockout for nine teams, placing the seven byes a 16-slot draw needs onto the top seeds. It produces all 8 matches across 4 rounds in the browser, with no account.
A 9-team single-elimination bracket runs 8 matches across 4 rounds, with 7 byes, which reduces the field to 8 in round two.
Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live — scores, standings and a public link — happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

Field guide
How many byes does a 9 team bracket need?
Seven. A knockout draw has to be a power of two, so nine teams sit in the next frame up — 16 slots — and the 7 unfilled lines become byes.
Nine teams in a 16-slot draw leaves seven byes — more than half the field. Round one is a single match, and 7 of your 9 teams do not play until round two. The draw is decided by seeding more than by results.
The match count does not change with the byes: a 9-team knockout is always **8 matches**, because every match eliminates exactly one team and 8 teams have to be eliminated. What the byes change is *who plays when*, which is why placing them correctly matters more than counting them.
Byes belong on the top seeds, in order. Scattering them for fairness is the common mistake — it rewards whoever drew the empty line rather than whoever earned it. Tournament brackets with byes covers the rule across all four formats.
How long does a 9 team knockout take?
On 2 courts with 30-minute slots, 5 slots — 2.5 hours, or a morning.
That figure is not 8 matches divided by 2 courts. Rounds run in sequence, because a round cannot start before the round feeding it has finished, so the honest number sums each round's requirement separately and rounds each one up.
The later rounds are where extra courts stop paying. A final is one match and cannot use two courts, so beyond your largest round every additional court sits idle. The tournament schedule formula works through why flat division understates a day.
A field this shape is where a group stage earns its extra matches. Nine teams in groups gives everyone two or three games for roughly the same court time, instead of 2 teams playing once and the rest skipping the round entirely.
Should nine teams play a knockout at all?
Honestly, often not. With 7 of 9 teams entering at round two, the bracket is doing very little sorting — it is publishing your seeding with a trophy at the end.
The trade is always the same. Eight matches is the cheapest way to find a champion, and it is also the format where half your entrants play once and go home. For a free local event that is usually fine; for a paid-entry weekend it usually is not.
If more games matter more than a fast winner, compare the round robin generator, where every team plays every other, or the group stage and knockout generator, which guarantees two or three games before a bracket decides it. How tournament brackets work sets the five formats side by side with their match counts.
If you want the knockout but not the single-loss exit, double elimination gives every team a second life at roughly double the matches.

How many matches is a 9 team bracket?
Eight matches over four rounds. Every match eliminates one team and eight teams must be eliminated to leave a champion, so the count is always one fewer than the field — byes do not change it.
How many byes in a 9 team bracket?
Seven. Nine teams sit in a 16-slot draw, and 16 minus 9 is 7. They go to seeds 1 through 7, who enter in round two while the remaining 2 teams play round one.
Who should get the byes in a 9 team draw?
The top seven seeds, in seed order. A bye is an advantage, so it should follow ranking rather than a random draw — otherwise you reward whoever happened to land on the empty line.
How many rounds does a 9 team tournament have?
Four. Rounds are the ceiling of log base 2 of the field, so anything from 9 to 16 teams runs four rounds. Doubling the field only ever adds one more round.
Is a 9 team bracket generator free?
Yes. The generator on this page runs entirely in the browser with no account and no signup. Running the event live on Tournamyx Scores — shared results, scoring from a phone — is free for up to 8 participants.
