In brief

What does the 18 team round robin generator do?

The Tournamyx 18 team round robin generator produces the complete fixture list for eighteen teams, all 153 matches in which every team plays every other team once, together with the standings table that ranks them. Both are built in the browser and the table recalculates as each score is entered.

An 18-team round robin runs 153 matches across 17 rounds, with 9 matches running in parallel each round and nobody sitting out. Every team plays 17 games.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live, with scores, standings and a public link, happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

How it works

Build an 18 team round robin in three steps.

  1. 1~1 min

    Enter your eighteen teams

Paste the list or use the auto-fill. Order does not matter in a round robin, because everyone meets everyone regardless. There is no seeding decision to get wrong here.

  2. 2~5 sec

    All 153 fixtures appear

The circle method pairs the field into 17 rounds of 9 matches, with every team playing in every round.

  3. 3done

Score it and the table sorts itself

Type any result and the standings recalculate on 3-1-0 points, sorted by points then score difference. Run it on Tournamyx Scores to keep the table live on a link everyone can open.

Field guide

How many matches is an 18 team round robin?

Eighteen teams play 153 matches. The formula is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2: each of the 18 teams meets the other 17, and dividing by two removes the double-count, because A versus B and B versus A are the same fixture. Every team plays 17 games, which is the guarantee that makes the format worth its length.

Because 18 is even, every team is on court in every round: 9 matches run in parallel and nobody sits out. That is what keeps the round count at 17 rather than 18.

On 2 courts at 30 minutes a slot, that is 85 slots, about 42.5 hours, or more than one day. Rounds run sequentially and a round cannot overlap itself, because a team would be on two courts at once, so the honest figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts and not 153 ÷ 2. Adding courts past 9 saves nothing at all: a round is only 9 matches wide.

153 matches is a season, not a Sunday

At eighteen teams a full round robin is 153 matches over 17 rounds, or about 42.5 hours on 2 courts. That is a league played over weeks, not an event that finishes on one afternoon, and treating it as a one-day format is the most common way an 18-team draw goes wrong.

If you have weeks, run it as a league and let the table build. If you have a day, the realistic alternatives are a group stage feeding a knockout, at 33 matches and 8.5 h with still 2 guaranteed games each, or Swiss, which ranks the same eighteen teams in 5 rounds and 12.5 h without anyone being eliminated.

Swiss is the underrated answer at this field size. It gives everyone 5 games, produces a genuine ranking, and costs 108 fewer matches than the full round robin.

Ties, points and who finishes top

The generator ranks on 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, then splits level teams on score difference. That is the convention most one-day events use, and it is worth writing on the entry form before anyone plays, because a tie-break invented after the fact is the argument nobody wins.

Head-to-head is the other common first tie-break, and it behaves differently: it rewards the team that beat the other, which feels fairer in a small field and breaks down in a three-way tie. With eighteen teams every side plays the same 17 opponents, so the table is directly comparable and score difference is a fair separator.

Round robin tournaments explained covers the tie-break options in full, and how to run a round robin has the circle method written out if you want to check the draw by hand.

How many games in an 18 team round robin?

153. Every one of the 18 teams plays the other 17, and n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 removes the double-count, so 18 × 17 ÷ 2 = 153 matches. Each team plays 17 games.

How many rounds does an 18 team round robin take?

17. An even field pairs off completely, so all 18 teams play in each of the 17 rounds, 9 matches at a time.

How long does an 18 team round robin take?

About 42.5 hours on 2 courts with 30-minute slots, which is 85 slots in total. Rounds are sequential, so the figure is the sum of the per-round slot counts, not the 153 matches divided by the courts.

Does anyone sit out in an 18 team round robin?

No. Eighteen is even, so the field pairs off completely and all 18 teams play in every one of the 17 rounds, with 9 matches running in parallel.

Is a round robin the right format for 18 teams?

Only if you have weeks. At 153 matches and roughly 42.5 hours it is a league season. For a single day with eighteen teams, a group stage into a knockout costs 33 matches and still guarantees 2 games each.

Can I run this on Tournamyx for free?

The generator on this page is free and unlimited. It just does not save anything. The free tier of Tournamyx Scores covers events up to 8 players, so an 18-team event needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock to run live.
