20 team bracket generator with twelve byes placed for you
Twenty teams need a 32-slot draw, so twelve of them skip the first round entirely. That is a lot of people waiting, and it is why twenty is the field size where a group stage stops being optional. Both shapes are costed below.

How it works
Build a 20 team bracket in three steps.
- 01~3 min
Enter your twenty teams
Paste the full list in seed order. Twelve of your twenty teams receive a bye, so the entry order decides more here than at any other common field size.
- 02~5 sec
Twelve byes place themselves
Twenty teams in a 32-slot bracket leaves twelve empty slots. They go to seeds 1 through 12, who enter at the round of 16 while the other eight play round one.

Score it live
Five rounds resolve as you enter results. At this size a public link stops being a nicety — Tournamyx Scores keeps the same draw live for all twenty captains.

Nineteen matches, five rounds, and twelve teams that wait
Twenty teams means nineteen matches, because nineteen teams must be eliminated. The draw needs 32 slots, so twelve byes are required and convention places them on seeds 1 through 12. Those twelve enter at the round of 16; the remaining eight play four first-round matches between them.
Read that again, because it is the whole problem with this size: your first round is four matches involving eight teams, while twelve teams stand and watch. Then the round of 16 is eight matches and the event properly begins. The bracket is legal, correctly seeded and perfectly fair — and it still wastes the first hour of twelve teams’ day.
On two courts at 25-minute slots the whole thing is ten slots, about four hours ten minutes. On four courts it drops to six slots, two and a half hours. On eight courts it is five slots — and that is the floor, because five rounds have to run in sequence no matter how much space you have. Past four courts you are buying very little.

Four groups of five removes every bye in the event
Twenty divides into four groups of five with nothing left over, and that single fact makes the group format unusually clean at this size. Each group is a ten-match round robin over five rounds, so forty group matches in total and every team plays four — the same four, with no byes anywhere, which means no team can complain that another got a free pass.
Take the top two from each group into quarter-finals and you add seven more matches: forty-seven in total. On four courts that is a long day, roughly seven hours with breaks; on six courts it comfortably fits a single Saturday. Against nineteen matches for the knockout it is more than double the sport, and it is the difference between twenty teams having a day out and twelve of them having a wait followed by a defeat.
The group stage + knockout generator builds this directly. Decide the tiebreak order before round one — in a five-team group where everyone plays four matches, teams finishing level on points is the normal case, not the exception.

| Round robin | 190 | 19 | 0 |
Twenty captains is where the spreadsheet stops working
The scheduling maths at twenty teams is not hard. What breaks is communication. Twenty captains, five rounds and a draw that changes with every result produces a steady stream of the same two questions — when are we on, and which court — for the entire day, and every answer requires you to re-read a spreadsheet on your phone.
A public link takes you out of the middle of that. Every Tournamyx event publishes one URL with no login and no install: captains check their own next match on it, spectators follow the bracket, and a score entered courtside updates it for everyone at once. It is the same system that ran a 406-team, 755-match event, so twenty teams is well inside what it handles.
The other thing to plan for is your widest round. The round of 16 is eight simultaneous matches whichever format you choose, and on two courts that is four slots of teams standing around. If you have any flexibility on bookings, spend it there — see court and field allocation for the arithmetic.

How many byes does a 20 team bracket need?
Twelve. Twenty teams sit in a 32-slot bracket, leaving twelve empty slots, which go to seeds 1 through 12. Those teams enter at the round of 16 while the other eight play four first-round matches.
How many matches are in a 20 team bracket?
Nineteen, across five rounds: four first-round matches, eight in the round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final. Nineteen teams must be eliminated and each match eliminates one.
How long does a 20 team tournament take?
About four hours ten minutes on two courts with 25-minute slots, two and a half hours on four, and two hours five minutes on eight. Five rounds run in sequence, so five slots is the floor.
What is the best format for 20 teams?
Four groups of five feeding quarter-finals. Twenty divides evenly into four fives, so every team plays the same four group matches, there are no byes at all, and the total is 47 matches against the knockout’s 19.
Can I run 20 teams as a round robin?
Only across a season. A twenty-team round robin is 190 matches over 19 rounds — that is a league, not a tournament. A five-round Swiss gets closer to the same fairness for 50 matches with nobody eliminated.
Is the 20 team bracket generator free?
The generator on this page is free and unlimited, and saves nothing. Running a twenty-team event live on Tournamyx Scores needs a paid plan or a one-off single-event unlock, since the free tier covers up to 8 players.
