Double elimination bracket generator with the losers bracket drawn for you

One defeat should not end a tournament somebody drove an hour to reach. Double elimination gives every team a second life — and doubles the bracket you have to draw. This one draws itself, including the grand final reset.

How it works

Build a double elimination bracket in three steps.

  1. 01~2 min

    Add your teams

Paste the list in seed order, or shuffle for an open draw. Any count works — if it is not a power of two, byes are placed on the top seeds automatically.

  2. 02~5 sec

    Both brackets appear

The winners bracket is an ordinary knockout. Below it, the losers bracket is drawn in full, with incoming losers routed to the far side of the draw so nobody meets the same opponent twice in a row.

  3. 03as you score

    Losers drop down automatically

Type a score and the winner advances while the loser is placed into the lower bracket. Beat the winners-bracket champion in the grand final and a reset match appears.

Field guide

How a double elimination bracket actually works

Every team has two lives. Lose once and you drop into the losers bracket, where you keep playing; lose again and you are out. Because every team except the champion has to lose twice, the total is fixed at 2n − 2 matches for n entrants — fourteen matches for eight teams, thirty for sixteen, sixty-two for thirty-two.

The losers bracket alternates between two kinds of round. A minor round pairs the teams already down there against each other, halving the field. A major round then feeds in the teams just knocked out of the winners bracket, restoring it. That alternation is why the losers bracket has 2k − 2 rounds against the winners bracket’s k, and why it takes longer to get out of than people expect.

The detail almost every hand-drawn bracket gets wrong is where the incoming losers go. Dropping the loser of winners-bracket match one straight into losers match one risks pairing two teams that just played — a rematch a single round after the first meeting. The generator above reverses the incoming losers so each lands on the far side of the draw from where they fell, which is the standard fix and what mainstream bracket tools do.

The grand final reset, and the hour nobody books

The team coming out of the losers bracket arrives with one defeat already. The team coming out of the winners bracket has none. If the losers-bracket team wins the grand final, both sides now have exactly one loss — so the tie is level, not settled, and a second match has to be played. That is the bracket reset, and it is the correct outcome rather than an oddity.

It is also the single most common scheduling failure in the format. Organizers budget for one final, the reset triggers, and the venue booking ends twenty-five minutes before the tournament does. Score the grand final in the generator above in favour of the lower-bracket team and the reset match appears, which is the cheapest way to see the problem before it happens to you.

Some events dodge it by giving the winners-bracket champion the title outright on a single grand final. That is a legitimate choice, but it has to be published before the event, not decided at 6pm — a team that reached the final through the losers bracket and is told the rules only now will not accept it, and they are right not to.

Double elimination in Tournamyx Scores: coming soon

Plainly, so you can plan around it. The live product — the part with the schedule, the courtside scoring and the public link — currently runs single elimination, round robin, Swiss, group stages that feed a knockout, and attempt-based placement scoring. Double elimination is in development and coming soon; if your event is next weekend, work from the generator above rather than waiting on it.

Everything above runs in your browser, saves nothing, and needs no account. Print it, copy it out, run your event from it — that is a legitimate way to use this page, and it is the honest answer until the live format ships.

If what you want in the meantime is a format where nobody goes home after one bad match, two of them already run live. A group stage feeding a knockout guarantees everyone three group games before anything is sudden. A Swiss tournament eliminates nobody at all and ranks the whole field in ⌈log₂ n⌉ rounds — for sixteen teams that is thirty-two matches against double elimination’s thirty, for four guaranteed games instead of two. For the full comparison of the two knockout styles, read single vs double elimination.

How many matches are in a double elimination tournament?

2n − 2, where n is the number of teams. Eight teams play fourteen matches, sixteen play thirty, thirty-two play sixty-two. Every team except the champion must lose twice, and each match produces exactly one loss.

What is a grand final reset?

The team from the losers bracket already carries one defeat. If they beat the winners-bracket team in the grand final, both have one loss and the tie is level, so a second match decides it. Budget a slot for it — most schedules do not.

Can the same two teams meet twice in a double elimination bracket?

They can meet again later, but not immediately. This generator reverses each incoming batch of winners-bracket losers before pairing them, so a team dropping down lands on the opposite side of the losers bracket from the opponent that just beat them.

Does Tournamyx support double elimination?

Not yet — it is in development and coming soon. Tournamyx Scores currently runs single elimination, round robin, Swiss, group stage into knockout, and attempt-based placement scoring. This browser generator draws and resolves the full double elimination bracket today, though it saves nothing.

How are byes handled in double elimination?

Byes are placed on the top seeds in the winners bracket, exactly as in a single elimination draw. A team that wins by walkover eliminates nobody, so the matching losers-bracket slot stays empty rather than inventing an opponent.

Is double elimination worth the extra matches?

It doubles the match count to guarantee each team two games. A group stage feeding a knockout usually guarantees three for a similar total, and a Swiss guarantees ⌈log₂ n⌉ with nobody eliminated. Double elimination wins when matches run in parallel with no court limit, as in esports.
