If you're running two or more divisions in one day, the answer almost nobody expects: don't give each division its own courts. Put every match into one shared queue and fill whichever court comes free. In the worked example below — three divisions, 45 matches, four courts — the shared queue finishes in 4 hours and the best possible dedicated-court split finishes in 5. Same venue, same matches, one hour of difference.

Multiple divisions is the problem I get asked about most and the one there's least written about. Every bracket tool will happily draw you three brackets. None of them will tell you whether all three fit before the caretaker locks the hall.

Why Multiple Divisions Is a Court Problem, Not a Bracket Problem

Three divisions means three independent draws. Each one is easy on its own — you've drawn brackets before. What makes the day hard is that all three want the same courts at the same moment, and nothing in a bracket tells you about courts.

It is several medium tournaments competing for the same floor space and the same referees, and the moment you see it that way the problem becomes arithmetic instead of anxiety.

The Only Three Numbers You Need Per Division

Before you can allocate anything, write down three numbers for each division. Everything else follows from them.

  • Total matches. Knockout is n − 1. A round robin is n(n − 1) ÷ 2 per group, added up across groups. The formulas for every format.
  • Round count. How many layers of matches have to happen in sequence. A group of four plays 3 rounds; a group of six plays 5; a 16-team knockout is 4.
  • Maximum concurrency. The most matches this division can possibly run at the same time — the size of its biggest round. Six teams in one round robin can only ever run 3 matches at once, no matter how many courts you own.

That third number is the one organizers skip, and it's the one that bites. Handing four courts to a six-team round robin gets you exactly the same finish time as handing it three, because a round only contains three matches. The fourth court is a gift to nobody.

So the duration of a division on C courts is not its match count divided by C. It is:

Duration in slots = the sum, across every round, of (matches in that round ÷ C, rounded up).

Round up on every round separately, because a round that leaves a court half-idle doesn't lend that gap to the next round. Six teams over 5 rounds of 3 matches, on 2 courts, is 5 × 2 = 10 slots — not 15 ÷ 2 = 8.

Should Divisions Share Courts or Own Them?

Here's the worked example. Three divisions, four courts, 20-minute slots — a completely ordinary school or club setup.

  • U12: 8 teams in 2 groups of 4. 12 matches, 3 rounds, max 4 at once.
  • U14: 12 teams in 3 groups of 4. 18 matches, 3 rounds, max 6 at once.
  • U16: 6 teams in one round robin. 15 matches, 5 rounds, max 3 at once.

45 matches in total. Now compare the two ways of running them.

Option A: dedicated courts

Four courts split three ways means someone gets two and the others get one each. There are only three ways to do it, so you can check all of them:

  • U12 gets 2 → U12 finishes in 6 slots, U14 in 18, U16 in 15. The day is 18 slots long.
  • U16 gets 2 → U12 in 12, U14 in 18, U16 in 10. Still 18 slots.
  • U14 gets 2 → U12 in 12, U14 in 9, U16 in 15. 15 slots — the best you can do.

15 slots at 20 minutes is five hours of play. And look at what's happening inside it: U14 is finished after 9 slots, and its two courts then stand empty for six slots while U16 plods through a single-court round robin. You own four courts and you're running one.

Option B: one shared queue

Now drop the walls. Every division's next available round goes into one pool, and each court takes whatever is at the front of the queue.

45 matches ÷ 4 courts = 11.25, so 12 slots. Check it against the floor: the longest sequential chain is U16's 5 rounds, and 12 is comfortably more than 5, so nothing blocks. Twelve slots is four hours.

One hour saved, on the same four courts, with the same 45 matches. The dedicated split wasn't badly chosen — it was the best of the three available. Dedicating courts is simply lossy, because every division rounds up to a whole number of courts and every division finishes at a different time.

The general rule, then. Your day's floor is:

Slots = total matches ÷ total courts, rounded up — but never fewer than the round count of your longest division.

That second clause catches the case people get wrong: eight divisions of four teams each is 48 matches, which looks like 12 slots on four courts, and it is. But one division of 20 teams playing a round robin is 19 rounds no matter how many courts you rent.

When Dedicated Courts Still Win

The shared queue wins on time. It loses on everything else, and sometimes those things matter more:

  • The court has to change. A sumo ring is not a soccer field, a U12 net height is not a U16 net height. If switching costs ten minutes, a shared queue pays that cost repeatedly and hands the hour straight back.
  • Referees are specialised. If your U16 officials can't do U12, a referee following the queue means a referee walking between courts all day.
  • Families need to leave. A shared queue means a U12 team can be called at any point across four hours. Dedicated courts let you tell the youngest division "you're done by one o'clock" and mean it.
  • Spectators want to find their division. "U14 is always on courts 3 and 4" is a genuinely valuable sentence at a busy venue.

The middle path is what I use most: dedicate courts for the group stage, when the divisions are big and parallel and everyone wants predictability — then collapse to a shared pool for the knockouts, when each division is down to a handful of matches and the rounding waste is at its worst.

How Do You Stop the Finals Colliding?

Every division peaks at the same shape: one final, everyone watching, ideally on the best court with the sound system. Three divisions starting together produce three finals wanting one court in roughly the same half-hour.

Don't solve this at the end of the day. Solve it at the start, by working backwards. Decide which slot each division's final should occupy, then:

Division start slot = its target final slot − its duration in slots.

With the three divisions above, say you want the finals back to back on the show court in slots 10, 11 and 12. U12 runs 12 slots on its own courts, so it starts at slot 0 to land at 12. A division needing 9 slots and finishing at 11 starts at slot 2. One needing 6 and finishing at 10 starts at slot 4.

The side effect is a gift: staggered starts mean staggered check-in queues, staggered car parks and a canteen that isn't destroyed at noon. The youngest division should generally start first and finish first, whatever the arithmetic says.

The Clash No Software Catches

One thing will break your day regardless of how you allocate courts: a person entered in two divisions. A player in both singles and doubles, a coach refereeing one division while their team plays in another, a school fielding a team in U14 and U16 with two shared players. This is the root cause of most schedule clashes.

Be clear-eyed about why no tool saves you here. Scheduling software works within one tournament: it lays out a round, and because a round already contains each team at most once, that round laid across your courts won't double-book anyone in that draw. Divisions are separate draws. Separate entry lists, separate brackets, separate standings — so nothing in division A's schedule knows that its 11 a.m. match contains a player who is also due on court 3 for division B.

Three defences, in order of how much they cost you:

  1. Ban it. One entry per person per day. Cleanest, and unpopular with your best players.
  2. Separate them in time. Run the two divisions that share people in different halves of the day. Costs you the parallelism, and it is by far the most reliable fix.
  3. List the overlaps and check by hand. Get the cross-entered names at check-in, write them on one sheet, and read both schedules against that sheet before publishing. Ten names is ten minutes of checking. Fifty means you should have chosen option 1.

How to Set This Up in Practice

Whatever tool you use, the setup is the same shape. Each division is its own event with its own draw and its own standings — don't try to force three age groups into one bracket, because their tie-breaks and formats will diverge and you'll unpick it later.

  1. Build each division separately and generate its schedule against the number of courts you plan to give it.
  2. Keep one master court map on paper: courts 1–2 are U12, courts 3–4 are U14, and so on. Each division numbers its own courts from 1, so the map is what stops two divisions both believing they own court 1.
  3. Set each division's start time from the backwards calculation above, not from "everyone starts at 9".
  4. Publish one link per division and put all of them on one page for spectators. People follow a division, not an event.
  5. Reserve two spare slots at the end. Something will overrun, and a day with no slack turns a 15-minute delay into a cancelled final.
