How to Run a Cornhole Tournament (Blind Draw + Bracket) [2026]

A 16-team cornhole bracket in double elimination is 30 matches. At 25-minute slots, four courts finish it in 12 slots, or 5 hours, with the rounds played in order.

Eight courts finish in 11 slots. That is 25 minutes saved for twice the boards, so most extra courts are wasted.

A court is two boards facing each other, with four bags a side. Courts are your constraint, and the length of the bracket decides how many are worth setting up.

Below: the format, how to run a blind draw, how many courts to set up, and the rules to publish before the first bag.

Key Takeaways

  • 30 matches is 16 teams in double elimination, with every team guaranteed 2 games. A single elimination bracket is 15 matches and guarantees 1.
  • At 25-minute slots, two courts take 17 slots (7.1 hours) and four take 12 (5 hours), with rounds played in order.
  • Past four courts the bracket barely speeds up. Eight courts finish in 11 slots.
  • A blind draw needs two pools of players and one draw from each. Up to 16 players can use the free random team generator.
  • A game ends at 21 points, not at a time, so set a time cap and publish it.

What Format Fits a Cornhole Tournament?

Nobody wants to carry a set of bags to a venue and throw one game. That is why double elimination is the common choice for cornhole.

Here is what 16 teams cost on four courts at 25-minute slots:

  • Single elimination: 15 matches, 1 guaranteed game, 5 slots, 2.1 hours
  • Double elimination: 30 matches, 2 guaranteed games, 12 slots, 5 hours, with the rounds played in order
  • Four groups of four into quarter-finals: 31 matches, 3 guaranteed games, 9 slots, 3.8 hours
  • Full round robin: 120 matches, 15 guaranteed games, 30 slots, 12.5 hours

Double elimination costs 15 matches more than a straight knockout, and in return every team gets a second game.

By the numbers the groups win. On four courts they finish 75 minutes sooner and guarantee 3 games to double elimination's 2.

Double elimination wins on feel. A team cannot be knocked out by one bad frame.

Single versus double elimination sets out the trade, and how double elimination works explains the losers bracket.

How Does a Blind Draw Work?

In a blind draw players sign up alone and partners are drawn at random. Teams do not exist until the draw, so you register players, not teams.

A plain shuffle can pair the two best players. A fairer draw uses two pools:

  1. Split the players into a stronger half and a weaker half, by rough rank.
  2. Put each half in its own hat.
  3. Draw one name from each hat. That pair is a team.
  4. Repeat until both hats are empty.

Thirty-two players make 16 teams. An odd number leaves one player without a partner, so keep a standby player ready before you draw.

The free random team generator does a similar job for up to 16 players. It makes at most eight teams, so it pairs 16 players and no more.

Type the players strongest-first and use its balanced setting. It deals them snake-style, so the first and last players share a team.

Past 16 players, draw by hand. Once the pairs exist, enter each pair as one team, such as Ana / Ben.

A blind draw also settles seeding. Partners are random, so pair strength is random, and the bracket order should be random too.

How Many Courts Do You Need?

A court is two boards, so four courts need eight boards and sixteen bags. The ACO rules put the boards 27 feet apart, front edge to front edge.

Here is a 16-team double elimination bracket at 25-minute slots, by court count, with the rounds played in order:

  • 2 courts: 17 slots, 7.1 hours
  • 3 courts: 16 slots, 6.7 hours
  • 4 courts: 12 slots, 5 hours
  • 5 or 6 courts: 12 slots, 5 hours
  • 8 courts: 11 slots, 4.6 hours

Four courts is the sweet spot. Going from three courts to four saves 4 slots, which is 100 minutes.

After four, five and six courts save nothing, and eight save one slot.

The bracket has 11 rounds, and the last ones are one or two matches. Extra courts sit idle through them.

A 32-team bracket is 62 matches. Four courts take 20 slots, 8.3 hours, and eight courts take 15 slots, 6.3 hours.

The ACO court is 8 feet wide and 40 feet long. Count courts by the lane space you can keep clear of spectators, not by the boards you own.

Court allocation shows how to turn a slot into usable minutes.

What Rules Should You Publish?

  • Winning score. The first team to reach or pass 21 at the end of a frame wins, per the ACO rules.
  • Scoring. A bag in the hole is 3 points and a bag on the board is 1. Cancellation scoring means only the difference counts, so 12 against 10 scores 2 points.
  • Bust rule. The ACO page does not set one. Some rulebooks add a bust rule for going over 21, and they disagree on the penalty. Pick one and publish it.
  • Time cap. A game ends at 21, not on a clock. Public rulebooks cap games anywhere from 12 to 30 minutes. Fix a cap, and say what happens when it is called, such as higher score wins.
  • Slot. I use a 20-minute cap plus 5 minutes for changeover, so a 25-minute slot. Replace it with a number you have timed.
  • Walkovers. Fix the score of a forfeit, such as 21-0.

Walkovers and no-shows covers the forfeit clock, and the tournament rules template has twelve clauses to copy.

How Do You Run the Day?

Number the courts and the boards, and post the bracket where players can see it.

Make the winning team report the score. They have a reason to walk to the desk.

Call the next two matches by team name. A court waiting for its next team wastes a 25-minute slot.

Play rounds in order. Starting a later round early makes a team wait for a result that is not in yet.

If you run behind, running late shows which fixes buy time and which buy none.

What Does Tournamyx Do for a Cornhole Bracket?

Tournamyx builds a double elimination bracket from your teams, places byes automatically, and lets you set the final to reset or to be a single game.

Double elimination runs from 4 to 64 teams in the app. If your field is not a power of two, byes fill the gap.

It lays each round across the courts you enter as fields, and publishes the bracket on one link.

It does not draw blind partners above 16 players, and it does not manage rest between games. Put the pairs in first and order the rounds yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many courts do you need for a 16-team cornhole tournament?

Four courts, which is eight boards, finish a 16-team double elimination bracket in 12 slots. That is 5 hours at 25-minute slots with rounds played in order. Two courts take 17 slots, 7.1 hours. Five or six courts finish in the same 12 slots as four.

How long does a cornhole tournament take?

A 16-team double elimination bracket is 30 matches and takes 5 hours on four courts at 25-minute slots. A 32-team bracket is 62 matches: 8.3 hours on four courts or 6.3 hours on eight. A game ends at 21 points, so set a time cap.

How does a cornhole blind draw work?

Players register alone and partners are drawn. Split players into a stronger and a weaker half, put each half in its own hat, and draw one name from each for every team. Thirty-two players make 16 teams. Keep a standby player for an odd number.

Is double elimination or round robin better for cornhole?

Double elimination is better for most cornhole days. A 16-team round robin is 120 matches and 12.5 hours on four courts, against 30 matches and 5 hours for double elimination. Groups into a knockout is a middle option: 31 matches and 3.8 hours.

What is cancellation scoring in cornhole?

Cancellation scoring means the points of one team cancel the other's, and only the difference counts. A bag in the hole is 3 points and a bag on the board is 1. If one team scores 12 and the other 10, the first team scores 2.

Can Tournamyx draw blind draw partners?

Not above 16 players. The free random team generator pairs up to 16 players into eight teams, and nothing else in Tournamyx draws partners. For a larger field, draw by hand with two hats, then enter each pair as one team.
