How to Run an EA FC (FIFA) Tournament [2026 Guide + Console Math]

Tournament Guides

An EA FC tournament is the one esports format where your consoles are courts.

Valorant and Mobile Legends run every match of a round simultaneously because servers are free; a console is a physical object with two controllers, and sixteen players on two consoles is a queue.

A 16-player knockout at 6-minute halves is 15 matches over 4 rounds — 2 hours on two consoles, 1 hour 15 on four.

Which means the arithmetic that applies here is the badminton-court arithmetic, not the esports one — a Valorant tournament is sized by how long a series takes, because it can run every match of a round at once.

You cannot. And this has a trap in it that catches almost everybody.

Key Takeaways

  • Consoles are courts. Count slots per round, not total matches — a round can only run as many matches as you have consoles.
  • A match at 6-minute halves takes about 15 minutes including menus, replays and celebrations. Half length is your biggest time lever.
  • 16 players, single elimination: 15 matches over 4 rounds. 2 hours on two consoles, 1 h 15 on four.
  • 16 players, four groups of four into a knockout: 31 matches. 4 hours on two consoles, 2 h 15 on four — and everyone plays at least three games.
  • Dividing total matches by consoles under-reads the day, badly. On three consoles a 16-player knockout looks like 5 slots and is actually 7.

How Long Does an EA FC Match Take?

At the default 6-minute halves, budget 15 minutes door to door: 12 minutes of football, plus team select, menus, the odd replay and the walk to the next chair.

Half length is the single biggest lever you control:

  • 4-minute halves — about 11 minutes a match. Right for large fields or a short evening.
  • 6-minute halves — about 15 minutes. The standard, and the right default.
  • 10-minute halves — about 23 minutes. Only for small fields or a final.

Changing from 6-minute to 4-minute halves cuts roughly a quarter off your entire event. Changing the format does not always save you that much.

How Do You Work Out the Schedule?

This is where EA FC events go wrong, and the mistake is arithmetic rather than football.

A round can only run as many matches as you have consoles.

So the number of slots a round needs is its match count divided by your console count, rounded up — and your event is the sum of those, round by round.

You cannot divide total matches by consoles, because a semifinal cannot start before the quarterfinals feeding it have finished.

Watch what that does to a 16-player knockout, which runs 15 matches in rounds of 8, 4, 2 and 1:

  • One console — 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 15 slots. 3 h 45 min.
  • Two consoles — 4 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 8 slots. 2 hours.
  • Three consoles — 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 7 slots. 1 h 45 min.
  • Four consoles — 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5 slots. 1 h 15 min.

Look at the three-console row. Fifteen matches divided by three consoles is five, so a flat division promises 1 h 15 min.

The real answer is 7 slots and 1 h 45 min — 40% longer than the estimate.

The rounding-up is where it hides: the final is one match on one console while two sit idle, and no arrangement makes that faster.

Going from three consoles to four saves you two slots. Going from one to two saves you seven.

The first extra console is worth far more than the fourth — useful to know when you are deciding how much kit to borrow.

This is the same curve we hit running eight fields at the IIUM Robotic Competition.

Going from two fields to four transformed the schedule; going from six to eight barely moved it, because by then the last round was one match and everything else was idle.

Buy or borrow the early ones.

The same logic, applied to physical venues, is worked through in court and field allocation.

What Format Should an EA FC Tournament Use?

  • 8 players, one console, one evening. Single elimination: 7 matches, 3 rounds, 7 slots — 1 h 45 min. On two consoles it is 4 slots, an hour.
  • 8 players, and you want everyone to play properly. Round robin: everyone plays all seven others, 28 matches over 7 rounds. 3 h 30 min on two consoles, 7 hours on one. It is the fairest possible result and it is a real commitment.
  • 16 players, short on time. Single elimination. Two hours on two consoles — but eight players are out after 15 minutes, which at an office event is most of your afternoon's goodwill gone.
  • 16 players, and this is the main event. Four groups of four into a knockout of eight: 24 group matches over 3 rounds plus 7 knockout matches, 31 in total. On two consoles that is 16 slots — 4 hours. On four consoles, 9 slots — 2 h 15 min. Everyone gets three games minimum.

Split the field into groups, score them, and let the qualifiers drop into the bracket.

The group format is the one I would pick for anything social. Knockouts are efficient and they are miserable for the half of the room that loses first.

The group stage and knockout explainer covers the shape in general, and if you are running this at work the office tournament guide covers the logistics around it.

For 16 specifically, the 16-team format breakdown compares every option at that size with the full arithmetic.

What Should the Rules Say?

EA FC arguments are almost always about settings nobody agreed in advance:

  • Half length. Publish it. This is also your schedule, so it is not negotiable on the day.
  • Team selection rules. Whether custom or Ultimate Team squads are allowed, or whether everyone picks from a restricted star-rating band. Unrestricted squads at a casual event means somebody brings a stacked side and the room stops enjoying it.
  • Difficulty, assistance and game speed. Fix them centrally so every match is the same game.
  • Extra time and penalties in knockout matches — on or off.
  • Disconnects. Who replays what, and from what score. Decide before it happens.
  • Draws in the group stage. Standard football scoring is 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and goal difference as the first tie-break. Publish the full tie-break order.

The tournament rules template covers the general clauses; the EA FC additions are half length, squad restrictions and the assistance settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a 16-player EA FC tournament take?

A single-elimination bracket is 15 matches over 4 rounds: about 2 hours on two consoles, 1 h 45 on three, and 1 h 15 on four, at 6-minute halves.

Four groups of four into a knockout is 31 matches and takes about 4 hours on two consoles or 2 h 15 on four, but guarantees everyone three games.

How many consoles do I need for a FIFA tournament?

Two changes everything; beyond that the returns fall off fast. For 16 players in a knockout, going from one console to two saves seven slots, while going from three to four saves only two.

Work it from the biggest round — a 16-player bracket opens with 8 matches, so two consoles means four passes through that round alone.

How long is an EA FC match in a tournament?

About 15 minutes at the default 6-minute halves, including team select, menus and replays. Four-minute halves bring it to roughly 11 minutes and 10-minute halves to about 23.

Half length is the most effective way to shorten an event without changing its format.

What is the best format for an EA FC tournament?

Four groups of four into a knockout, for 16 players.

Everyone gets at least three matches before elimination starts, the group tables are easy to follow, and it costs about 4 hours on two consoles.

Straight knockout is faster but sends half the field home after one game, which is the wrong trade at a social event.

How do you score the group stage?

Three points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss, exactly as in football. Goal difference is the standard first tie-break, then goals scored, then the head-to-head result.

Publish the order before you start — group tie-breaks decide who qualifies and they always come up.

Can you run an EA FC tournament with an odd number of players?

Yes. In a knockout the draw fills to the next power of two and the top seeds take byes into round two).

In a group stage, make the groups uneven — three groups of three and one of four, for instance — and be aware that a team in a smaller group plays fewer matches, so rank on points per game or take only the top two from each group.

Running an EA FC Tournament: Recap

  • Consoles are courts. Sum the per-round slot counts; never divide total matches by consoles.
  • A match at 6-minute halves is about 15 minutes. Half length is your strongest time lever.
  • 16 players, single elimination: 2 hours on two consoles, 1 h 15 on four.
  • 16 players, four groups of four into a knockout: 31 matches, 4 hours on two consoles, and three guaranteed games each.
  • The first extra console buys far more than the fourth.
  • Publish half length, squad restrictions, assistance settings and the group tie-break order.

Tournamyx builds the groups, works out the knockout from the group tables, and lays the whole thing across however many consoles you actually have — then puts it on a public link so the room can see the table without crowding the screen.
