Field guide
How long a badminton round robin takes
The clock is set by the match. In badminton, a best-of-three rally-scoring match with knock-up and changeover takes about 30 minutes, so this page uses 30-minute slots. Rounds are played one after another and a round cannot overlap itself, because a player would be in two matches at once. That means the run time is the sum of the slots each round needs, not the number of matches divided by the courts.
On 4 courts that gives the figures below. The largest field that fits in a four-hour block is 8 players, and the largest field that fits in an eight-hour day is 9 players.
Badminton round robin on 4 courts, 30-minute slots
| Field | Matches | Rounds | Slots | Run time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 players | 15 | 5 | 5 | 2.5 h |
| 8 players | 28 | 7 | 7 | 3.5 h |
| 12 players | 66 | 11 | 22 | 11 h |
| 16 players | 120 | 15 | 30 | 15 h |
How many courts a badminton round robin needs
A round of 16 players is 8 matches wide, so a court past number 8 is never used. The table shows 16 players on every court count that makes sense. Some steps save nothing, because a round of 8 matches needs the same number of slots on two different court counts.

|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120 | 60 h |
| 2 | 60 | 30 h |
| 3 | 45 | 22.5 h |

Running a badminton round robin in Tournamyx
The generator on this page is free and keeps nothing. Tournamyx Scores runs the same event live: scores come in from any phone, the table updates for everyone on one public link, and the schedule is laid across the courts you enter a round at a time. Agree how ties in the table are broken before the first match, because a three-way tie at the top is the argument nobody wants on the day. See badminton tournament software for the full picture, or the tournament match calculator to try other slot lengths.

How many matches are in a badminton round robin of 8 players?
28 matches over 7 rounds, because each of the 8 players plays the other 7 once. On 4 courts at 30 minutes a slot that is 7 slots, about 3.5 hours.
How many players fit a badminton round robin in one day?
On 4 courts at 30-minute slots, the largest field that fits in eight hours is 9 players, and the largest field that fits in four hours is 8 players. A bigger field needs more courts, a shorter match, or groups feeding a knockout.
Can I run a badminton round robin live with scores?
Yes. Tournamyx Scores runs a round robin live with a public link for players and spectators. The free plan covers 8 participants, so a larger field needs Plus (64 participants) or a one-off event unlock.
