Be honest about which of the two jobs you have

There are two genuinely different needs behind the same search. One is a draw: you have eight names, you want a bracket, you will print it or screenshot it and that is the end of it. The other is an event: the same eight names, but results arrive over four hours and everyone needs to see the current state.

The first need is small and should stay small — it should not require an account, an email address or a subscription. The second is where the work actually is, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you commit to anything.

What Tournamyx does

The free half: a bracket in the time it takes to type names

The generators on this site need no account and save nothing. Paste a team list and the bracket resolves as you type, with the match count, round count and byes shown for your actual entrants. Type scores into it and winners advance, so you can rehearse the shape of your event before committing to anything.

If you already know your field size, go straight to it: 8 teams is seven matches over three rounds with no byes, 12 teams needs four byes, 16 teams fills a clean four-round draw, and 24 teams needs eight byes across five rounds.

Where a picture stops being enough

Nothing in those generators is saved. Close the tab and it is gone — which is exactly right for a one-off draw and exactly wrong once results start arriving. At that point a bracket that only exists in your browser becomes a screenshot in a group chat, and then another screenshot after every match.

Seeding and byes, which is where draws go wrong

Standard seeding pairs strongest against weakest and keeps the top seeds apart: at sixteen teams, seeds 1 and 2 sit in opposite halves and seeds 3 and 4 head the middle quadrants, so the best possible match is the final rather than a semi. Seed only the first-round pairs and you can accidentally put your two strongest teams in the same half.

Byes are the other place draws break. A team count that is not a power of two needs them, they belong on the top seeds, and bunching them in one half means one finalist has played fewer matches than the other. Automatically, on the top seeds. Twelve teams sit in a 16-slot bracket and get four byes; twenty-four teams sit in a 32-slot bracket and get eight. You can shuffle first if you have no rankings and want them placed at random.

Can I seed the bracket myself?

Yes. Enter teams in seed order and standard seeding is applied — seed 1 against the lowest seed, top seeds kept apart until late. Or use the shuffle for an open draw.

What is the largest bracket the free generator handles?
