Most organizers are not an events department

A lot of tournament organizing happens in the middle ground — a university club, a community league, a company running an annual internal cup, a school sports day. Nobody in that group does this full time, and it shapes what matters when choosing anything.

That middle has a specific shape. There is no dedicated events team, so setup time is a real cost. There is turnover, so anything tied to one person’s account is a liability. There is usually a physical venue with a fixed booking window, so the format has to fit real hours. And the budget is often zero, or a one-off line item, rather than a subscription someone has to renew forever.

What Tournamyx does

Free where most events actually sit

Events with up to 8 teams are free on Tournamyx, with no limit on how many you run and no card required. That is not a trial — an eight-team draw is seven matches over three rounds, which covers a very large share of club nights, internal competitions and league fixtures outright.

Above that, there is a one-off unlock for a single event as well as ongoing plans, which matters for the committee that runs one large competition a year. The pricing page has the current tiers.

Before any of that, the free generators let you test formats with your real team list — no account, nothing saved. If the format arithmetic does not work for your venue hours, you will find that out in two minutes rather than after setup.

Format range, and why it changes your day

Single elimination, round robin, Swiss, and group stages that chain into a knockout are all supported, along with attempt-based scoring for judged events like robotics or athletics. The practical value of that range is that it lets the format fit the booking rather than the other way around.

Sixteen teams is fifteen matches as a knockout, thirty-one as four groups of four into quarter-finals, thirty-two as a four-round Swiss, and a hundred and twenty as a full round robin. Those are four completely different days in the same sports hall. The 16 team bracket page has the timings by court count.

For judged and attempt-based events — robotics runs, athletics field events — scoring is not head-to-head at all, and the robotics segment page covers how that is handled.

What it has been run at, and what it does not do

The largest Tournamyx event so far is 406 teams across 755 matches at multiple venues; the case study has the detail. That is the honest reference point rather than a theoretical ceiling.

The clearest current gap is double elimination, which is not supported yet — if your event needs a losers bracket, better to know that now than halfway through setting one up. For anything else you are unsure about, just ask us. We would rather tell you it is a poor fit than have you find out on match day.
