In brief

What is the Thomas Cup format template?

The Tournamyx Thomas Cup format template is a 16-team group stage and knockout laid out the way the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals are: four groups of four, a round robin in each group, and the top two from every group into the quarter-finals. It resolves 24 group ties and 7 knockout ties as you enter scores.

Every generator on Tournamyx is free and needs no account. Running the same event live, with scores, standings and a public link, happens at scores.tournamyx.com, free for up to 8 players.

Where it stops
The template follows the format, not the official draw. It deals one team from each pot into every group and pairs group winners with runners-up from other groups, but the real quarter-final pairings and tie-break order are set by the tournament regulations, so check those before copying a real result

How it works

Run the Thomas Cup format in three steps.

  1. 1~1 min

    Replace the labels with teams

A1 is the first team in Group A, A2 the second, and so on. The four teams with a 1 are the top seeds, one in each group. Edit each line in place.

  2. 2~3 min

Enter each tie as matches won

A tie in this event is five matches, so a result such as 3 and 2 is the whole tie. The group tables update after every score.

  3. 3done

    Watch the knockout fill

When a group is fully scored its top two take their places in the quarter-finals, and the bracket carries on to the final.

Field guide

How the Thomas Cup finals are built

The Thomas Cup for men and the Uber Cup for women both use the same shape: sixteen teams in four groups of four. Every team plays the other three in its group, which is six ties per group and 24 group ties in total. The top two in each group go through, so eight teams reach the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and the final. That is 7 knockout ties and 31 ties from start to finish.

Each tie is itself five matches, three singles and two doubles, so the whole event is 155 matches. A tie is decided by who wins more of the five, so it can never end level, which suits a knockout. The template scores one tie as one result, for example 3 and 2.

How the template deals the groups

The roster is read in pots of four. The first four lines are the four top seeds, and the template puts one in each group, so A1, B1, C1 and D1 start in different groups. The next four lines are the second pot, and so on. That is how a seeded group draw is normally set up, so the strongest teams cannot meet before the knockout.

Group tables rank by points, with 3 for a win, and then by score difference. A tournament may publish a different tie-break order, so read the regulations of the event you are copying.

Using it for your own badminton event

Nothing in the shape is specific to national teams. A club or company with sixteen teams can use the same four groups and eight-team knockout, and a result can be a tie score, a match score or a point score, as long as the higher number wins.

How many ties are played in a 16-team Thomas Cup format?

31 ties in the Tournamyx Thomas Cup template: 24 in the group stage, where four groups of four play every other team once, and 7 in the knockout. Each real tie is five matches, three singles and two doubles.

Does the Uber Cup use the same format?

Yes. The Uber Cup finals for women use the same 16 teams in four groups of four with the top two advancing, so the Tournamyx Thomas Cup template works for it unchanged.

Does the template match the official quarter-final draw?

Not necessarily. The Tournamyx template pairs group winners with runners-up from other groups, but the real quarter-final pairings come from the tournament regulations. Check them before you copy a real result into the bracket.
