Tournament Score Sheet Template (Printable) [2026]

A tournament score sheet needs nine fields: match number, court, time, both team names, a score for each side, the winner, and signatures.

Print one sheet per match plus 10% spares. A 16-team group stage into a knockout is 31 matches, so print 35 sheets.

At two sheets to an A4 page that is 18 pages. Fill in the match number, court, time and names before you print, so the only handwriting is the score.

Below are copy-paste sheets for single-score and set-based sports, and a way to get a signed sheet from the court to the results desk.

Or paste your fixtures into the free printable score sheet and print one sheet per match.

Key Takeaways

  • Nine fields: match number, court, time, team one, team two, score one, score two, winner and signatures.
  • Print matches plus 10%, rounded up: 17 sheets for an 8-team group stage, 35 for 16 teams, 52 for 24.
  • Use a single-score sheet for football, futsal, basketball and netball. Use a set-by-set sheet for volleyball, badminton, tennis and table tennis.
  • A sheet signed by both teams and the referee is your evidence in a dispute. Keep every sheet until the protest window closes.
  • The sheet Tournamyx exports is one A4 page per match with one score box per side, so set-based sports should use the set layout below.

What Fields Does a Tournament Score Sheet Need?

Every field answers a question that someone asks at the desk, or in a dispute.

  • Match number. The one key that links the sheet to the schedule and the results table.
  • Court or field. It tells a runner where the sheet came from, and which official to ask.
  • Scheduled time. It shows whether the match started late.
  • Team one. Print the name. Handwritten names cause spelling mismatches at the desk.
  • Team two. Same rule.
  • Score for team one. A separate box for each side.
  • Score for team two. A goal difference tie-break needs both numbers, not just the winner.
  • Winner. A separate box, because a level score after a shootout still needs a winner.
  • Signatures. One line for each captain and one for the referee.

Add a notes line if you have room. Use it for a walkover, a retirement or a shootout result.

A forfeit needs the scoreline your rules fix written on it. The walkovers guide explains how to set that.

Copy-Paste Score Sheet: One Score per Side

Use this for any sport scored as a single number: football, futsal, basketball, netball or hockey.

MATCH No. ____ COURT ____ TIME ____
TEAM 1: ______________________ SCORE: ____
TEAM 2: ______________________ SCORE: ____
WINNER: ______________________ IF LEVEL, HOW DECIDED: ______________
SIGNED TEAM 1: ________ TEAM 2: ________ REFEREE: ________

Paste it into a document, set two to a page and print. Fill in the match number, court, time and both names for every match before you print.

In a knockout, the teams are not known yet. Print "Winner of match 9" on the team line, so the sheet exists before the teams do.

Copy-Paste Score Sheet: Set by Set

Use this for volleyball, badminton, tennis and table tennis. Record every set score, not just who won each set.

MATCH No. ____ COURT ____ TIME ____
TEAM 1: ________________ SET 1: ___ SET 2: ___ SET 3: ___ SETS WON: ___
TEAM 2: ________________ SET 1: ___ SET 2: ___ SET 3: ___ SETS WON: ___
WINNER: ______________________
SIGNED TEAM 1: ________ TEAM 2: ________ REFEREE: ________

Add columns for sets 4 and 5 if you play best of five.

Tie-breaks in these sports run on ratios. A set ratio or a points ratio cannot be worked out from sets won alone.

The volleyball guide and the table tennis guide both list the order to publish.

What About Heats, Times and Attempts?

Athletics and field events record a time or a distance for each entry, not a score for each side. Use one line per entry instead.

ENTRY: ______________ LANE / ORDER: ___ ATTEMPT 1: ___ ATTEMPT 2: ___ ATTEMPT 3: ___ BEST: ___ PLACE: ___

The school sports day guide covers heats, field events and house points in full.

How Many Score Sheets Should You Print?

Print one sheet per match plus 10%, rounded up. The spares cover spoiled sheets, replays and a third-place match.

A third-place playoff adds one match to a knockout. The match count formulas show where it comes from.

Here is what that means at common sizes, counted at two sheets per A4 page:

  • 8-team round robin: 28 matches, print 31 sheets, 16 pages.
  • 8 teams, two groups of four into semi-finals and a final: 15 matches, print 17 sheets, 9 pages.
  • 16 teams, four groups of four into a knockout: 31 matches, print 35 sheets, 18 pages.
  • 24 teams, six groups of four into a knockout: 47 matches, print 52 sheets, 26 pages.

Sort the sheets by court, then by time. Each court gets a stack in playing order, so a referee never searches for the next match.

The tournament checklist says when to print them. The schedule template gives you the match numbers.

How Should a Score Sheet Get From the Court to the Results Desk?

A sheet is only useful once its result reaches the standings. That journey is where events slow down.

At the 406-team IIUM Robotic Competition, referees and desk staff wanted paper. It needs no signal and does not run out of battery.

Set a rule for each step:

  • The referee fills in the score and gets both captains to sign before anyone leaves the court.
  • A runner or a captain brings the sheet to the desk at the end of the match, not the end of the round.
  • The desk enters the result and files the sheet by match number.
  • Nobody throws a sheet away until the protest window has closed.

One desk can only enter so many results an hour. The table tennis guide works through the numbers for sixteen tables feeding one desk.

State the protest window, and which record wins, in your rules.

Do You Still Need Paper Score Sheets If You Use Software?

Many halls and referees still want paper as a backup, and a signed sheet settles a dispute faster than a log entry.

Tournamyx exports one A4 page per match. Each page carries the match number, slot and field, both team names, a score box for each side, a winner box, and signature lines for both sides and the judge. The footer can carry your organization's logo.

There is one score box per side, so for a set-based sport keep the set scores on your own sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a tournament score sheet include?

Nine fields: match number, court, scheduled time, both team names, a score for each side, the winner, and signatures from both teams and the referee. Add a notes line for walkovers, shootouts and retirements.

How many score sheets do I need for a tournament?

One per match plus 10%, rounded up. A 16-team group stage into a knockout is 31 matches, so print 35 sheets, which is 18 pages at two sheets per A4 page. Print the knockout sheets after the group stage if names are unknown.

Who should sign a tournament score sheet?

Both team captains and the referee. A signature from each side makes it hard for either to dispute the score later, and the referee signs to confirm the result. Keep every signed sheet until the protest window closes.

Should a score sheet record every set or just the winner?

Record every set score. Set ratio and points ratio tie-breaks cannot be worked out from sets won alone, and a signed sheet with every set is the evidence if the standings are challenged.

What do you do if a score sheet is lost?

Ask the referee and both captains to write the result on a spare sheet and sign it before the next round. Your rules should state which record wins if the desk entry and the sheet disagree.

Can I make a score sheet in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Build the nine fields as one print area that fits half a page, then print two per A4 sheet. Number the matches from your schedule grid, and pre-fill the court, time and team names before you print.
